I slept one night on Bourge and when I saw the pictures here I decided to try the restaurant. I was the only one in the restaurant - maybe because it was Wednesday 7:00 and it just opened. I had a Truffles Menu, with 5 plates. The first plate was and little consume with truffles, than and smoked fish with foie gras - that was just unbelievable good, one of the best foie gras plates that I had ever eat!! As main plate I had a veal with gratin asparagus - it was ok, quite dry but ok. Than a plate of delicious French cheese - you can choose the cheese, they bring to you the options in a little table and the best part: an chocolate soufflé in the best French style - the best!!!! The staff was lovely and the bill wasn't expansive for a truffles menu. Overall, it was a great experience and I would love to repeat it!

I would have rated this restaurant four stars except...We ate there on Thursday last on a lightening trip to Southern France, and had a great meal. The review would have been five starts except for the strange lack of atmosphere, due in part to the super speedy delivery of the food. While obviously waiting for ages isn't fun, the three course came so fast we could have been out of there within an hour, and had not time to sit and relax. The restaurant was empty when we walked past at 7.30, on our return at 8.30, it was busy but people started to leave at about 8.45, so they must have eaten in just over an hour. With wine starting at 30e per bottle one would have thought the clientele would have time to savour. While we were at our table, a man came in at about 9.00 and was turned away - we couldn't hear why.
Anyway, five days later, and on an evening (Monday) when most places were shut, we decided to return to the Beauvoir. We arrived at 8.35 - the restaurant was busy as it was one of the only places open. Despite several tables all laid for dinner, we were, to our shock, turned away, with the 'manager' informing us in a less than friendly manner, that they were all booked. We had a lovely Indian meal elsewhere and walked back past the Beauvoir at 9.50. All tables, still there, unused, not booked at all. It left a very nasty impression. Ok Beauvoir, if you don't want so serve past 8.30 or if you don't feel like it. put a sign up. Don't treat good customers this way. We will certainly never offer them our custom again.

Madame Monsieur

What a gift this meal was! A bit of a walk away from the center of town was rewarded by a meal that could hold its own as superb anywhere in France or elsewhere. The newly renovated dining room is very stylish. The atmosphere was very relaxing because tables are nicely spaced, there was no canned music, and the French would die before screaming in restaurants as we Americans are prone to do. Above all the food was simply spectacular, served with friendly, unfailingly courteous and efficient care.

A first course of an ethereal smoked trout souffle was followed by sea bass with zucchini slices and tasty mussels already out of their shells. The fish was perfectly cooked -- a few seconds more could have spelled ruin, because when it flakes it's too late. It was complemented by a foamed beurre blanc affair that seemed to have be enriched with a very flavorful fumet de poisson. Foam may seem a passing fad but its use was entirely legitimate here, causing the sauce to cling unctuously to the fish.

Dessert was a perfect tarte sablee with roasted figs that could ahve been cut with a laser they were so fine. I often find figs to be weak broth indeed, but roasting had brought out the perfection waiting inside them. My companion had the chocolate souffle instead -- a signature of the house that has raised a classic to an art form. I watched jealously as an orb or perfect vanilla ice cream melted down into its crater before stealing a spoonful. My fig tart was unfortunately far too good to share.

In short, if you're in Bourges, don't even think of eating anywhere else. And did I say this three-course menu was only 29 Euros? If you're nearby, a trip to this restaurant and the 13th-century glass in the ambulatory of Bourges' incomparable cathedral may well be a high point of your trip to France.

Although a cold and wet day things became better after a visit to le Beauvoir. They staff were very friendly on arrival and the set menu was amazing value at E15. This price included amuse bouche and we could not fault the service or meal . We had rabbit as a main course which was tasty and well cooked
We have booked a second visit as difficult to find better value in vicinity.

Only in Bourges for one night in September 2012, the hotel desk suggested the recently renovated Le Beauvoir about a block away, for our evening meal. My wife and I were first to arrive, and without reservations.

The receptionist accommodatingly seated us at one of the dozen or so tables. The faint odor of paint and new carpet confirmed the recent redo as we eagerly perused the menu. Local and seasonal fare with accompanying wines of the region had us looking forward to the next couple of hours.

We selected our entrees (my choice was beef kidneys) and a red Sancerre and were soon presented with a delicious "amuse-gueule". By this time every table had filled and the staff was bustling about making sure each course arrived on time.

Dessert was a delicious chocolate compote and was followed by selections from a cheese cart. Total for the evening was just under $100.
One of the highlights of our two weeks in Europe.
