“What France is all about!”
Reviewed August 24, 2012

I was doing a solo cycle trip of the Loire valley, following the Loire a Velo route. As with the previous reviewer, I just stumbled upon Beaugency and it is a typically French small town. Full of character and attractive. I decided to have a night here and found the Hotel Licorne up a side street near the main square. A very clean hotel, in an old rustic type building but with modern facilities. I had an en suite room on the top floor, complete with oak beams running along the roof, and those old shutters on the windows that are so characteristic of older French buildings. The room was not luxurious, but for a 2 star hotel costing 50 euros per night it was perfect for my needs. A clean, working toilet with a good shower; a comfortable bed; and a small TV with no English language channels (a bonus in my book!). One complaint stops it getting a 5 star rating, and that is the heat in the room. Despite leaving windows open and having the supplied fan on all night, it was still uncomfortably hot in the room. Maybe something to do with it being on the top floor? Air conditioning would be good, but then you are getting into 3 star territory. Owners were very friendly and looked after my bike by putting it away in a secure part of the hotel overnight. Not that it mattered, I got the impression that I could have left it leaning against the railings of the town square, unlocked, and it would have been safe. It's just that kind of place! Cannot comment on the breakfast as I opted out.

Room Tip: Avoid attic rooms in hot weather.

Whilst returning from Perigord at the start of June, we decided to return via the Loire and, having visited Chambord, we continued towards Orleans looking for a nice town in which to spend the night. Quite by chance we stumbled across Beaugency, which was utterly gorgeous as a place, with a magnificent river frontage (spectacular bridge) and a huge 12th century monastery (in which you can now stay). We were looking for inexpensive and funky which is exactly what we got. The room had great personality and although it was blisteringly hot, it would be completely unfair to complain about the weather as it was 30 degrees even in the evening. The hotel is attached to a lively bar (which sadly we did not have an opportunity to take full advantage of) but our room was quiet, comfortable, had a great bathroom with a brilliant shower (plenty of water pressure) and the breakfast was more than generous. The brothers who own the bar and restaurant are charming and welcoming and for 60 Euro for a double room (excluding breakfast) you could not wish for anything better.

Room Tip: Our room was the second on the left at the top of the stairs which is at the end farthest from the b...
