The chateau is a little gem and would have had an excellent rating if the gardens and walk around the terrain had not been undergoing restoration. We look forward to those works being completed in the not too distant future when we shall surely visit again. The tour around the chateau interior is well marked out and the climb to the attic is well worth the effort to see the huge and ancient beams. The rooms are all beautifully set out. The tapestries are works of art and the portraits and pictures deserve being looked at closely. Do take time to visit the Chateau if you are in the Indre.

I enjoyed walking to the chateau from my hotel in the town of Azay le Rideau and finding a beautifully furnished chateau with lovely paintings, artifacts and a fantastic view.

"Facetted Diamond" with the words of famous French writer Honoré de Balzac! Built on an island of the River Indre is one of the most popular Loire Castles, because of its setting. The Château isn't so big but all the rooms have a lot to show. The Grand Staircase (L'Escalier d'Honneur) rises in straight flights and has 3 floors with a double bay window on every mezzanine. It's France's oldest staircase of this kind. There are English-style landscaped gardens with trees from all over the world. The walk around the Castle's island makes it so special. You may see the Castle from different angles, mirrored in the waters of Indre River. A paradise for photographers. In the past there was a 15th c. cannon walk, which was removed, just to let the visitor fully enjoy the mirrored view of the Castle at its best.

One of the less known Chateuax, but one of the most charming. It was a good surprise.
Good visit for half period.

In a lovely setting surrounded by water, the castle lived up to its publicity, although the display in the roof was a bit tacky, as it tried to link to every fairy tale and adventure story and film going, including Harry Potter!
