“The downs and ups of our experience at Pom'Poire”
Reviewed June 11, 2014

In February we had made a confirmed reservation for dinner and an overnight stay here in June.

Arrived about 6pm to find no one on reception (no bell). The chef (Bastien Gillet) eventually arrived and after much looking at paperwork and the computerised booking system admitted, after prompting from us, that there was a problem ... he could find no trace of our booking. After much toing and froing of phone calls, Mme Gillet, Bastien's mother and the person in charge of bookings arrived. By this time we had been standing by the reception desk for some 3/4 hour without offer of a seat or a drink. Up to this stage there had been no acknowledgement of fault or offer of apology.

Fortunately I had printed out the booking confirmation from Logis and on seeing this evidence, there was a change of attitude and Mme Gillet then found alternative accommodation for us in St Michel-sur-Loire (about 10km) and, as that was more expensive than the booked room at Pom'Poire, she gave us the difference in cash.

As the new hotel did not have a restaurant, we decided to return to Pom'Poire for dinner and asked Mme Gillet to allocate a table on the terrace to us. Apparently this was not possible as all the outdoor tables were already booked (and, of course, she did not have a record of our original request).

When we arrived back for dinner, we were delighted to find that a table had been found for us on the terrace ... just as well because none of the indoor tables were occupied so we would have been very lonely in there!

From this point on things got better and better. We were presented with complimentary glasses of champagne and treated like royalty with very warm and attentive service from Mme Gillet and the two waitresses. As for Bastien Gillet's food ... it was sublime. A short but imaginative menu with delightful amuse bouche all cooked to perfection and beautifully presented.

It was just a pity that one of us had to abstain from the excellent wine as we had a 10km drive back "home" after our superb meal.

As I wish to score the hotel and the restaurant separately, I am also posting this review under Pom'Poire's hotel thread.

“Wonderful food and a lovely setting”
Reviewed September 1, 2013

We visited in April, the food was great and really good value. A 3 course adult meal was €20, and 2 courses for the children came to €12. Really exceptional quality, kids loved the fine dining experience. Our 5 year old said it was the best meal she's ever had (ok, she's only 5, but it says something for how friendly they were). Must visit if you are in the area, too far to walk from the village though.

“Good meal in entertaining surroundings”
Reviewed June 16, 2013

This is a modern building, in modern, tidy commercial orchards - something of a contrast from all the historic architecture in the area. Tables were slightly quirky, with different (but stylish) glasses on different tables, and seriously silly modern service plates on our table. Imagine a large, grey glass ashtray and you get somewhere near it. Food very nicely cooked. My pork loin, which I suspect was cooked 'sous vide', was unbelievably tender and full of flavour. Service was cheerful and attentive. Would recommend this place, and it would be a nice overnight stop.

“A wonderful restaurant amid orchards”
Reviewed January 31, 2013

Enjoyed a superb Sunday lunch with friends. Food was beautifully presented with additional "amuses bouche" to titillate the palate. Divine wine from a very local vineyard. This is a family concern, with parents front of house and son cooking. Rurally situated amidst fruit orchards, and you can stay overnight too. Azay has a spectacular moated chateau to visit while you are there.

“Imaginative food, attentive service”
Reviewed October 15, 2012

Haven't got a clue what some of the things we ate were, but they were delicious. This restaurant is in the countryside between Azay le Rideau and Langeais and is well off the beaten track. It's well signposted though and definitely worth the journey. The food was imaginative, well cooked and well presented. The service was professsional and efficient.
