“Our 3 month stay in Azay met our 'wish list' in every way.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 23, 2014 for a stay in April 2013

The house was in a great location, with a short walk in to the delightful town of Azay. Good choice of restaurants, ideally placed to see the surrounding areas, chateaus and vineyards. Great for local walks too. The locals were friendly and made us feel very welcome, particularly the neighbours who helped look after us and Francisco, who was a complete star! The house itself was well presented, clean and everything you needed for our stay. After three months we felt very much at home and were quite emotional when it was time to leave for England. Would well recommend .... but do leave some weeks free for us to be able to return, which we hope to visit again very soon.

“Relaxing and comfortable - yet busy enough to keep our teenagers happy.”

We spent a relaxing three weeks in Azay. The house is located just a ten minute walk from the busy, pretty town of Azay-le-Rideau. The property itself is spacious and very well equipped. The pool is fantastic - a real treat to have it all to ourselves. There are plenty of places to eat in Azay - and a great Italian ice cream place just near the chateau. The property is an ideal base for exploring the region. The chateau at Azay is a must - but our favourite place was the chateau at Montsoreau (great for children/teenagers). We were made to feel a real part of the community for the few weeks we were in Azay and were all sad to leave - will definitely return.

“Could have been so nice”

This house has an awful lot going for it. It's in a lovely town, with fairytale chateau, some great bakeries, restaurants and ice-cream places, surrounded by really interesting wineries. It has a large and pretty well equipped kitchen, and the wifi is both quick and good (you don't have to keep logging on as in some places). The pool is lovely, and very private. The neighbours are lovely. And it really is just a 10 minute walk to the town centre and fresh croissants.

But there are some buts. First, when we arrived after a long drive the house was simply not clean, not by a long way, the kitchen (including oven and cooking utensils) and bathroom/toilets in particular were really unpleasantly dirty. Loads of dust in the living room. The barbecue grille was disgusting. Etc.

We’re not the kind of couple who hoover every day and clean the oven after every use, but it really was bad. Had we been on our own we would probably have turned around, found a hotel and demanded our money back. But since our daughter and her boyfriend, plus a friend, were already on their way, we decided to make the best of it. The two of of us went to the supermarket to buy oven cleaner etc, and spent three hours cleaning so that our guests would not have to see what we did (and we did more cleaning the next day). We complained to the owner, who apologised and sent a cheque to us for £50, which was a gesture, if on the cheap side (given that the house itself is not cheap to rent). But owners who live in another country need to put in place proper supervision and not leave it to guests to discover shortcomings.

Also, although it is advertised as sleeping 6, I wouldn't try it with six adults. We were two couples and one single adult, and both couples thought the room with the double bed unsuitable for a couple, opting for the twin rooms. The double scarcely has room for anything except the bed, and if two are sharing it one cannot get out of bed easily (next to wall, low beams, etc); plus there's very little storage space in the room. Also, the comfortable seating in the living room is two (very comfy) armchairs and one sofa which can seat three, but four adults would be a push, even if they were very good friends. That apart, plenty of plates, etc, plenty of room round the dining room table and six loungers around the pool, so no complaints there. The TV does get English TV channels, which was great for us, since we were there for the first week of the Olympics, though it is a very small non-flat set indeed; I didn’t take a ruler to it, but it felt more like 14”, and sitting on the sofa you can’t really make out detail (like scores!).

It seems stingy to complain about the size of a TV, but it fitted a pattern here: old sheets, mismatched glasses, etc. OK, it’s a holiday let, but when you’re paying over £1000 a week it’s not very impressive.

That said, we had a lovely time. But the state of the house when we arrived after a long, long drive was depressing, distressing, unpleasant, and unacceptable.

Management Response
Oct 5, 2012
We were as disappointed and shocked by the state of the cleanliness of the house as the tenant was. We have been renting this house for 15 years and never had such a problem. We have since changed our cleaner and have a weekly inspection in place. We have also put in a new flat screen television, a complete new linen pack and sorted out the variety of glasses. We are comfortable that we have taken this advice and acted upon it. That is the benefit of the open review system that Trip Advisor operates.
