This was our second visit to the hotel and once again we were really imlressed by the hotel, its staff and the food. The quality of everything is good, not flashy but in keeping with the lovely old building which is well preserved. Convenient for a walk round the town and an ideal central point for visiting the Loire chateaux.

The one possibly difficult thing is the stair case which is spiral and could be difficult for less fit people.

Overall an excellent place to stay for a few days or just overnight en route.

This hotel is very conveniently located in the centre of Azay, just a short stroll from the chateau. A really strong point is the excellent parking and the bike storage - both well thought out and easy to use. Our spacious comfortable room (Loches) was an interesting combination of very traditional decor with a spankingly modern shower room. Both were light and bright, there were plenty of mirrors and lights and hooks - things often omitted in French hotels. The room faced a courtyard and was very quiet. The receptionists were extremely friendly and helpful. We didn't try the restaurant as the menu wasn't to our taste and for breakfast we went to the bar Francois I next door to the hotel, at a reasonable 6.50 euros each, excellent value. Both highly recommended.

A pretty quick visit to this hotel, so wasn't able to try the restaurant or even the breakfast but everything was excellent. Very helpful reception staff (perhaps the owners) and lovely, decent-sized rooms. Nice big courtyard etc.;

I'd recommend the private car park. Something about gravel under the wheels of car...

We choose to pre-book this hotel and were very glad. The room was large by France standards and quite lovely and comfortable. It was also a perfect location for visiting the Chateau, just behind the hotel. They do have a hotel, but we had not realized they were closed for service on Sundays. However, the staff booked us in a lovely restaurant a few doors away. I would recommend a stay here if you are in this area of the Loire.

We stayed here with friends 5 June 2014. We were on a bycicle trip and they had a locked room for the bycicles. The hotel is so charming and beautiful decorated. Also with airco. The breakfast was superb. We had a very good time here.

My wife and I spent a week cycling in the Loire Valley and Le Grand Monarque was the stand out of all our stays. First, the hotel has a wonderful room with secure electronic lock to store our bikes -- no other hotel had anything close to this level of ease and security. Second, the owner and staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly. For example, the owner told us about all the local restaurants and put no pressure on us to eat at the hotel. When the external restaurant we had picked turned out to be closed that night, we ended up eating at the hotel and boy were we glad we did....absolutely fabulous food that was so fresh and elegant, yet simply prepared. Third, the lovely architecture of the two buildings has been beautifully preserved to made the experience feel quaint and intimate but without sacrificing modern amenities.

We stayed at both 2 star and 4 star hotels on our trip and I can easily say that Le Grand Monarque was the best value and the most enjoyable. I've never written a review on TripAdvisor despite reading other reviews for years. This wonderful stay was so good that I just had to share.

We used the Le Grand Monarque as a stopping point after spending a week in the Dordogne and heading to Paris for a long weekend. When we arrived at the hotel we were greeted by a very friendly English speaking staff. The hotel has no elevators so our heavy bag was carried to our room for us. (Much appreciated) The hotel was beautiful decorated and very clean. The lobby was inviting and quiet.

Our room overlooked the courtyard with a view of the town. Outside our window was a cherry tree full of ripe fruit. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was clean and well appointed.

The hotel is located in the center of Azay-le-Rideau which is a small Loire Valley town with a beautiful chateau. Everything is within easy walking distance from the hotel. We were able to park in the public lot just across the street from the hotel. Once we parked the car we never had to get back in it until we checked out.

Breakfast in the morning was a bit expensive (€12) but it was very good. A wide variety of choices with juice, bread, cheese, eggs, yogurt and much more.

I'd stay in Le Grand Monarque again. It was a very good value.
