“A beautiful place with very kind hosts”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 28, 2014

We arrived at Troglododo soaking wet after cycling through a thunderstorm. There was some initial difficulty checking in with all the torrential rain and lightning, but this was more than redeemed when they brought us tea and cake and very kindly offered to wash and dry our gear which is definitely beyond the call of duty. The rooms we stayed in looked brand new and were very nicely decorated with lots of modern touches, and lovely bathrooms. The rooms and cave rooms are set in beautiful gardens and it would be lovely to sit on the terrace on a sunny evening, unfortunately not possible for us. Alain recommended les Grottes for dinner which was very good, and very kindly drove us there and collected us afterwards to save us getting soaked again - definitely way beyond our expectations. Breakfast the next day was excellent with lots of home-made goodies including a rice pudding and yoghurts. Alain also took the trouble to explain a better route for our cycling trip the next day. He really did everything he could to make our stay as good as possible. This is an interesting and comfortable place to stay - if a small distance out of town.

Set in the hillside just 10minutes walk out of the lovely Azay le Rideau, Trogladodo has some great individual rooms, ours was in the loft but had its own outdoor area with table and chairs. We took advantage of this by cooking a meal in the unadvertised kitchenette which was a nice surprise.
Alain was a great help and the breakfasts were fantastic!

This is a magical place. The caves are magnificently appointed, comfortable and summer-cool despite the July heatwave. Alain is an obliging host and serves a splendid home-made breakfast. Azay le Rideau itself is a charming little town. The only snag at present is access between the accommodation and the car park, which is higher up the cliff. OK coming down, but carrying our bags back up would have been beyond our years and stamina, so Alain obligingly drove them (and us) up in his van. He told us he intends to install a lift for next year, in which case Troglododo will become the perfect base for exploring this lovely part of France. We hope to return. Merci, Alain!

Let me start by saying that staying in a cave is a really unusual thing to do and we did it with a sense of adventure and were glad we did. Alain is a very charming host and has done a magnificent job in converting these caves into a very modern and comfortable set of rooms. In fact we would stay again if in the area in the future. He uses very modern technology to control the lighting in the rooms and throughout the property. The bedding, the bathroom and decor were all top notch and were comparable to any very nice hotel you might stay at in a large city-a large walk in shower, a glass bowl sink, nice beds and very quiet (after all it is a cave!)

When we arrived we were not sure we were at a hotel or not. It's well marked from the road but when you pull in there is no signage and no office to check in to. As we were turning around to park Alain came up and asked us if we were staying and had a reservation- that was the check in. After we parked he helped us with our luggage down a long, descending stairway carved out of the stone to the level where the rooms were. Still not to sure of what we had gotten ourselves into, we followed him to the room (Doo Little) and he showed us around and demonstrated the controls and how everything worked. After a big sigh of relief, we asked him where we could get some wine and he brought us some from inside and we sat on the terrace outside our room and enjoyed the cool weather and late afternoon breeze. He gave us a recommendation where to eat in Azay (Les Grottes) which was outstanding.

Breakfast the next morning was communal and very good-fresh pastries, jams, cheeses, cakes, cereal, homemade yogurt, coffee, teas and juices. My wife was blown away by all of the preparation and attention to detail that they had done. She also said the yogurt was the best she had ever eaten .Alain showed us the plans for expansion and converting more caves into rooms- it will be great when finished.

A couple of things to be aware of: 1) there was no confirmation email after we paid the deposit. I had to call a few days before we left for France to confirm. 2) You will need a PayPal account to leave a deposit. 3) They don't accept credit cards- that was not made clear when making the reservation and it should be. Luckily I had enough Euros to pay at checkout. 4) Alain lives on the property with his family including his parents and their pets. Not a big deal to us but it could be off-putting to some when his dad's big German Shepherd roams around your terrace.

All in all it was a great experience and one I would encourage other travelers to this part of the Loire Valley to try.

For some folk the thought of spending a night in a cave would send shivers down their spine but Troglododo is beutifully decorated and tastefully illuminated if you dont want that pitch dark experience. The hosts could not have been more pleasant and informative. When we arrived on our motorcycle after a long hot run a pitcher of cold apple juice was brought to our room.
Breakfast was a communial affair and though we struggle with french we were not excluded from conversation exchanging travel ideas with other guests and extoling the wonders of an ulster fry.
This was an experience we will plan to revisit soon.

This is a fascinating place to stay as the rooms are caves carved out of the hillside a couple of kilometres out of town. The interiors are whitewashed and beautifully furnished, and decorated in an eccentric and colourful style with imaginative lighting. Our host was very welcoming, and as we were the only guests that night we were allowed to select whichever rooms we liked. We slept very well in this peaceful location, and enjoyed a good breakfast. A delightful and most unusual place we would definitely return to.

Stayed in Petite Troglododo, and had friends in Victoria H, in September - it's even better than it looks on the website because the shower rooms are beautiful too, and the wide terrace is well-planted and stunning. There are also steps down to sloping areas with loungers and BBQs plus most of the rooms seem to have kitchenette areas. Alain is friendly and helpful, the breakfast is good and everywhere was very clean. There's loads to do the area (Azay-le-Rideau itself is attractive with a lot of restaurants) - we enjoyed Villandry chateau and gardens, and the Maurice Defresne Museum is amazing (everything from old prams to a mobile guillotine.....). We will definintely try to stay here agan and for longer than 2 nights next time.

Room Tip: In the height of the summer a room with a window not just a half-opening, stable-type door would be...
