Stayed in Petite Troglododo, and had friends in Victoria H, in September - it's even better than it looks on the website because the shower rooms are beautiful too, and the wide terrace is well-planted and stunning. There are also steps down to sloping areas with loungers and BBQs plus most of the rooms seem to have kitchenette areas. Alain is friendly and helpful, the breakfast is good and everywhere was very clean. There's loads to do the area (Azay-le-Rideau itself is attractive with a lot of restaurants) - we enjoyed Villandry chateau and gardens, and the Maurice Defresne Museum is amazing (everything from old prams to a mobile guillotine.....). We will definintely try to stay here agan and for longer than 2 nights next time.

Room Tip: In the height of the summer a room with a window not just a half-opening, stable-type door would be...

Booked this as a last-night stay surprise for my husband and it lived up to every expectation.

Don't be put off by what seems to be a long road out of the town. There's a track which cuts off the corner and, on foot, you're into Azay in a few minutes. When you get to the front door at the top of long, wooden steps through a gothic archway, you have to ring the number on the wall to announce your arrival.

The rooms built into the rock are well decorated and tastefully furnished with up-to-the-minute technology (Alain Sarrazin took great delight in showing it off - quite rightly. There's a lot to be proud of). We stayed in Victoria H which also has a neat, well-equipped kitchen corner (which doesn't appear on the website virtual tour) with microwave, hob, fridge, corkscrew and tea & coffee. There's a player & CDs and WiFi although we had a bit of trouble with that. Each room has a "private " bit of terrace with a table and chairs. Ours was screened from next door by bamboo in pots.

There are plenty of places to eat and Alain recommended some as "gourmet" or "simple". See our review of Les Grottes. If that's simple, gourmet must be out of this world.

The nearby chateau is lovely, more attractive on the outside than inside and they do a son et lumiere each evening in July and August.

Breakfast (included in the price) is plentiful and at a communal table which does wonders for your French.

They take dogs but there were lots of cats and kittens so we had to be vigilant. They don't take credit cards (next year?).

While we were there, they were converting a 6th room and Alain's brother is developing Troglodelice, quite close by.

The website is an accurate view of what is on offer (not always the case). I just don't see how this could be bettered. Next time we want to stay more than one night so that it can feel like coming home to our own cave.

The rooms are literally carved out of the mountainside. Whitewashed with lime plaster, beautifully appointed, and most likely the most unique place you will ever stay. The owner told us that 100 years ago 1/2 of the population in this region lived in hollowed out caves. Our room had a 400 year old bread oven and kitchen sink carved in the rock. Our room included a complete bathroom with roman shower, queen size bed, TV, sofa, coffee table, definitelt not your average cave. I strongly recommend this unique experience.

We stayed in the Victoria H room. Beautiful. The room is spacious, with a fire place, lounge area, fresh flowers, a stereo and even a small hidden kitchenette and a separate cloakroom. The bathroom is spacious as well, with a big shower.
The rooms are excavated in the tuffeau, therefore you can feel a bit of dumpness but it's not disturbing and you quickly get used to it.
it's very quiet and clean and I would recommend it for a few relaxing days in the Loire valley.
Breakfast was ok (but no croissant, no pain au chocolat..)
The owners are very kind and helpful.

A perfect complement to visiting the fairy-tale castles nearby was staying in the hi-tech, super-cool caverns of Troglododo. The most original hotel I've ever stayed at, warm reception, fabulous breakfast and totally comfortable and clean. A treat for young and old!
