Owner description: With the dawning of the Renaissance, the mighty medieval fortress of Amboise gave way to a royal residence, during the reigns of the Kings of France Charles VIII and François I. The Court, a large number of men and women of letters and European artists, stayed here on invitation from the sovereigns, one example being Leonardo da Vinci who lies here in peace in the Château’s Chapel. This place of high renown in the History of France boasts an exceptional collection of Gothic and Renaissance furniture illustrating the artistic finery of the first French Renaissance. After a visit of the Royal House and the impressive Cavalry Towers, the walk continues in the magnificent panoramic gardens overlooking the Loire river.

“Cycling into Amboise was a sight to behold”
Reviewed December 4, 2013

In October I cycled from Blois to Amboise via the cycle paths recommended by Detours de Loire.
I will never forget arriving at the top of the hill to see the town set out below me. Having just ridden for many kms this lovely small village was bustling. Blois and Amboise would have to be two of my favourite towns along my journey.

“Important castle with great view”
Reviewed November 29, 2013

If Leonardo Da Vinci liked this castle, imagine if you are not going to!! :-) That´s where he died and where he is buried, so you can visit him in a little cute chapel, so nice! Amboise is very important to the history, and many kings where raised and lived there, It was also great for defense because is located in the high part of the mountain. The stories are amazing, and the castle is really beautiful!!

“The best views!”
Reviewed November 18, 2013

I've been here a few times and always take friends when I can. It's a lovely chateau, although certainly not the most beautiful and a little sparsely furnished. But the views make up for that!

“Lovely Chateau”
Reviewed November 15, 2013

We were staying in Amboise so naturally we had to visit. It's beautiful and the views from the Chateau spectacular. At night from across the river the Chateau is lit up to great effect.

This chateau is in the centre of Amboise and overlooks the Loire River. It is an outstanding example of the many chateaus in the Loire Valley. Most of hte rooms are not overcrowded with artefacts, and this helps to tell the story in a powerful but simple manner. The guided audio tour provides an excellent commentary and the gardens are flawless.
