Owner description: This 22-stage trail is designed not only to give you a taste of Dijon's charm, but also to take you back in time and show you the history of our town. Each numbered stage takes in a place of interest, and the whole trail can be covered on foot in about one hour. If you feel like finding out more about Dijon, this trail proposes 3 different loops: the Rousseau loop, the Zola loop and the Moses loop. But there's no reason to hurry! Take your time and enjoy the friendly atmosphere in the many museums, galleries, shops and cafés terraces!

The owl path is the best idea I’ve seen to accommodate tourists who are short on time to experience a city. Just find an owl placard on the ground, and follow where it points. No maps needed and no anxiety about getting lost! If you are traveling with kids, they will enjoy spotting the owls and following them to the next sight.

Dijon’s major sights are easily walked in 2 hours, and the owls make sure that you never get lost while exploring. I had only three hours’ train-stop in the city during my last visit, and I was so grateful to the owl for guiding me to all the destinations that I needed to see—so grateful, in fact, that I stopped by the Tourist Office to buy an inexpensive replica of the owl placard to take home with me. Great souvenir! (Just be sure to NOT put it in a carry-on when you return home on plane. Put it in checked luggage since the pointy end of the placard will set off security screening and your carry-on WILL BE SEARCHED).

TIP: Be sure to visit the city’s original owl, which the placard owls pay tribute to. He sits around six feet from the ground on one side of the Notre Dame Cathedral, which is conveniently located behind the Ducal Palaces in the heart of Dijon. It’s landmark #8 on the Owl Path. For good luck, rub the owl WITH YOUR LEFT HAND. Don’t forget! He will impart wisdom and a sharp sense of direction, so you’ll never get lost on your many future adventures!

Dijon has discovered the best way to provide tourists a means to see the city sights. Following the owl trail is the greatest idea, simple, effective and fun. More cities should do this.

We had one night in Dijon before our flight out of Paris, couldn't find a hotel near the airport so we stayed in Dijon, took an early cab to the train station and then on to Charles de Gaule. We really wished we were headed for the airport and didn't have to spend the night ANYWHERE and take MORE cabs and trains, but there we were in Dijon! But, it turned out to be a real highlight. We loved our hotel, Hotel Montchapet and our restaurant DZ'envies and most of all, we found the little owls set into the cobblestones that lead us right to the owl that one touches with their left hand to make a wish, "You're welcome, Mr. President".

We purchased our booklet at the tourist bureau and commenced our discovery walk of Dijon. What a wonderful way to discover the history of Dijon. At one stage we were stopped in the street by a local who urged us to go through a passage to look at a staircase and courtyard. Recommend to all visitors, particularly those with children.

On a day out in Dijon we decided to follow the owl trail route around the city. Ideally you should get the free map from the tourist information to assist you but to be honest you could pick it up at any point and just follow the markers inset into the pavement. There are only a couple of points where I lost the markers for a few yards and had to glance at the map to spot where I had turned away from the route. The trail will take you around all of the major sites and is a great way of just ambling around the old town.
