After an exhausting two days leading up to our recent trip to France, an overnight flight, a long wait for a rental car and a bit of a time finding our hotel in Dijon, my husband, two dogs and I were all looking for a relaxing, easy, and typically Burgundian dinner to end the day. We were thrilled to find a delightful experience on all counts at Le Theatres des Sens.
We were greeted warmly and seated immediately as we were the only patrons present at the early hour of 7pm. It is always a thrill to bring our two little dogs into a restaurant with us in France, something we can rarely (and never legally) do in the U.S.A. The menu included both la carte selections and 3 course "formules" which we could combine with daily specials as well as regular offerings. We both opted for the "menu bourguignon" for 25 euros.
Our appetizer of escargot was perfect. We'd never had escargot in Burgundy before, but they lived up to the hype...large, meaty, perfect. Our next course was a gratin of shrimp, tiny cubed veggies and cheese...sounds a bit suspect, perhaps, but it was delicious. Our desserts were excellent as well, particularly my cassis creme brûlée, which featured a perfectly sweet creme along with nicely tart berries. The demi-bouteille of white Burgundy was exactly the right wine for the meal.
We plan on heading back tonight for the boeuf Bourgignon, red Burgundy, and perhaps a dessert including the famous regional treat, pain d'epice. We will also return to Le Theatre des Sens the next time we find ourselves in Dijon.
