At 8pm when we sat down I wondered why we had been advised to book in advance. At 8.15 I knew as this terrific restaurant (I did not have the benefit of seeing TA reviews in advance) filled to its large capacity almost exclusively with locals judging by the rapport between staff and clientele. And what a great time we had then watching them seriously and humorously enjoy serious food in the 'poulet' capital of France. Our own food was rather simple (the famous chicken came with just rice and a sauce) and enjoyable without being spectacular but was served with panache. The staff were exemplary and humoured my rubbish French with good grace and even volunteered to take our photo. I loved every minute of it.
