“Great atmosphere”
Reviewed October 28, 2013

At 8pm when we sat down I wondered why we had been advised to book in advance. At 8.15 I knew as this terrific restaurant (I did not have the benefit of seeing TA reviews in advance) filled to its large capacity almost exclusively with locals judging by the rapport between staff and clientele. And what a great time we had then watching them seriously and humorously enjoy serious food in the 'poulet' capital of France. Our own food was rather simple (the famous chicken came with just rice and a sauce) and enjoyable without being spectacular but was served with panache. The staff were exemplary and humoured my rubbish French with good grace and even volunteered to take our photo. I loved every minute of it.

“Delicious food with prompt courteous service”
Reviewed September 24, 2013 via mobile

Obviously, from reading a few negative reviews, some people simply cannot be satisfied. The decor was a delightful throwback to more elegant days. The dining room is beautiful and eating on the outdoor deck on a cool night, an added treat. We had fois gras and escargot to start, chicken in a cream sauce as our entrees and a raspberry tart to finish an exquisite meal. Each course was first rate. The foie gras creamy and fresh. The escargot came, out out of the shell, in a perfect garlic, butter sauce worthy of the crusty French bread served with it. The chicken in cream sauce was served with 6 large morel mushrooms. The sauce was delicate and tasted very fresh as was the chicken breast. The fresh raspberry tart was big enough to share. This is a first rate dining experience restaurant.

“disappointing Bresse chicken”
Reviewed August 15, 2013

We drove from Lyon to Bourg-en-Bresse to try the famous chicken in cream sauce. The chicken was tender enough but the cream sauce tasted like Campbell's Cream of Chicken soup that had been diluted. Although I know the restaurant did make the sauce from scratch, it seemed like something was missing to make it spectacular as the dish is supposed to be. As mentioned in a previous review, the chicken had little flavor.

“Great brasserie in grand style”
Reviewed July 21, 2013

A memorable place to eat with authentic 1900 décor. The service was professional and the food excellent value . We had the 37 euro menu of four courses and drank red and white house wine. It was hot and we both had an interesting local salad with smoked duck breast. My husband had rather unevenly cooked lamb chops with excellent pommes dauphinoise and I tried the Poulet de Bresse with cream sauce. We both had the cheese course and were pleasantly surprised to be offered a full and interesting selection to choose from rather than the two or three wafer thin slices now quite common in French restaurants. The choice of desserts was outstanding and though we do not usually eat them we really enjoyed our raspberry tart and crème caramel.

“A big brasserie -type traditional restaurant”
Reviewed July 14, 2013

We walked into this restaurant as the terasse looked very nice. However, as we did not have a reservation we were seated at the back of the restaurant close to the kitchen. Not as bad as it sounds: the restaurant was well air-conditioned and we had a chance to observe the staff working. Now, this is a big restaurant with a large staff but organization seemed flawless and everyone knew their place. We had a set menu with a fresh salad with magret de canard for starters and a bresse chicken for main course. The salad was good but the chicken a bit dry. We drank a superb 2005 Pommard, very reasonably priced at 48 euros.
