Burgundy is always a good place to stop when travelling from Nice to Calais. We have stayed in the hotel before when our car broke down, but not eaten in the restaurant.
We thought that their package of New Year’s Eve in the hotel, dinner, a bottle of champagne and breakfast sounded great.
We were not disappointed. It was a six course dinner, which was perfectly cooked and in portions that did not leave you bloated at the end. Wonderful foie gras mousse, langoustine tails, firm turbot, capon and two desserts. The stand out was the chocolate dessert a millimetre thick in the shape of a comma filled with a crème. The only tiny quibble is that the chef could learn from The English how to cook parsnips, these were al denté when they would have been so much better roasted till they were caramelised.
We had a wonderful glass of Meursault sold by the glass at the beginning and then were disappointed by a half bottle of a different Meursault, we should have had another two of the “by the “ glass” Meursault which was near perfect. The disappointment was made up for by a wonderful bottle of Gevrey Chambertin.
The service was perfect, relaxed and efficient. We speak good French but I don’t know if it was deliberate that we were served by a Frenchman who spoke perfect English: if it was, it was a kind touch.
Finally the restaurant is three small intimate rooms beautifully decorated. In summer you eat outside on the terrace.
