This is a very basic hotel so those expecting and wanting more should look elsewhere. While we were allocated large rooms (20 and 21), there is no elevator and with two "bad backs" in our entourage, it was a hard slog up and down two floors via a winding staircase. These rooms also have mezzanine-level bathrooms so again, challenging for the less mobile and agile.

The bonus is easy access, through close proximity, to precinct shops and outlets as well as to key attractions.

We had a perfectly fine two night stay at Hotel Athanor. Yes it is an old building with some quirky rooms. Elevator is available but not for all rooms. Just do your research. Our room was clean and adequate. The location is excellent, breakfast was fine, staff was helpful as needed. It is quite a walk from the train station and taxis are not always available so keep that in mind or plan ahead to arrange one. We managed to roll our suitcases through the town, thankfully it was a delightful afternoon. If you book thru third party, be aware that you may not get exactly what you asked in terms of beds - we requested one of the rooms to be twin beds, but the hotel had to scramble to make it work. They apparently didn't get that request from the booking agency. All in all, we would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: Don't get a room in the tower if you have difficulty climbing spiral stairs. Rooms 301, 302 were...

We arrived not having booked something and stumbled across the hotel and was pleasantly surprised ..We had a car and did not mind the Car Park was down the street because we walked everywhere in the old city as the hotel was in a great location. We had to go through the Breakfast room to get to our rooms but had a great size room and one of the biggest bathrooms I have had in Europe ...No air Con but we stayed in September so did not need it at all. The new Tapas bar next door was amazing and make sure you look at the wonderful light show against the Church

Room Tip: We had room 11 huge room no safes and air Con and stairs old stone to get to room but great value fo...

Where do I begin? How about the parking that is 4 blocks away? What about the shag carpet that smells like it has never been washed? What about the flood? Oh yes, it has got to be the flood.

After walking 10 minutes from the public parking, we were put into a room the size of a matchbox. The shag carpet was disgusting. The smell from the outside (which faced an alley) was that of rotting fish. We asked to change rooms and thankfully they obliged.

In our new room, which was hardwood, the air conditioning didn't work.

Then at midnight, we got a good thunderstorm (no different than any other good storm). The 3rd floor of the hotel quickly became a swimming pool as water poured out from every fixture attached to the ceiling!!! Of course there were no front desk people as they had gone home for the night. Thankfully we were on the 2nd floor. We packed our belongings and got the heck out of there. Thankfully the owner met us at the door and instructed us to go to Hotel Panorama down the road. I am not sure if the building has been repaired or not, but I would never stay there again.

On most occasions, accommodation unfolds without complication. When issues arise, the response can determine the mood of a holiday. To ensure air-conditioning for a late July summer holiday, rooms were reserved at The Anathor 5 months earlier. The air-conditioning was found broken late in the afternoon, this was known to the staff. I was not informed of this upon arrival at 11am or check-in at 3pm. The hotel was unable to change rooms, guarantee cooling for either night, change hotels or change the pricing to the non air-conditioned rate (Expedia’s problem). At this point I discovered there was NO Wi-Fi in almost all of the rooms. Expedia was notified but unable to persuade the hotel to cancel the reservation to make a new booking.
The following night, the hotel FLOODED at 11:30pm. Water from a storm rained into the lobby and flowed like a stream down the stairs and out the hotel. This cut off the electrics and set off the alarms. The hotel is unstaffed after 11pm, there were no instructions. The owner finally arrived but was initially locked-out (electronic key pad). He gave a few guests instructions (in French) to move to his wife’s hotel 2km in the country. Fortunately, a friend in our group is fluent in French and was able to understand. Her room was flooding and we were all concerned about the integrity of the roof. It still required strong insistence (twice) to be relocated before the owner reluctantly agreed to allow the move. One guest had been patiently waiting in her room for instructions, listening to the alarm and water invading the roof while watching her ceiling bow before coming down to investigate. We did not settle into the new hotel until almost 1pm for another disrupted, sleepless night. On check-out, there was concern about how to charge for the reservations! The following day, we passed the Athanor to hand over the keys: there was still no power at 12:30pm.
Expedia is dealing with the hotel; there has been no acknowledgement of fault or reimbursement.

Room Tip: There is very poor WiFi availability. Any problems incurred with the hotel will not be acknowledged.

We stayed in Beaune for 2 nights. The hotel is easy to get to from the train station - perhaps a 5 min. walk. The room had a great atmosphere and charm. Our room was basic - twin beds with a private bath and AC. The beds were comfortable and the AC worked - sometimes not always the case. The rooms were clean and the staff helpful. The wireless only works in the lobby areas and I didn't find it to be a great connection, however I didn't have a need to be online other than a quick check of email to see if anything was important so this wasn't a bother, but if one has a need to do work online then this would be a problem. Our room faced the street, but we didn't have any issue with noise and I am a light sleeper. We didn't eat breakfast so I can't attest to that quality. I would stay here again without looking for another hotel. I would however try to book directly with them. I booked through hotels.com and their descriptions (AC / twin beds) was hard to follow. Really good hotel - won't go wrong here!

Room Tip: The internet might be an issue if you need to be online, however I didn't so this wasn't an...

Like most respondents, I was nervous about staying here due to the negative comments but it fit the budget and the location was great - our group had a total of three rooms booked (one queen, one king, and one triple). We booked a comfort room (queen) which is exactly what it was. The bathroom was large and fairly new and the Air Conditioning worked great. We requested a room off the street, but were unable to be accommodated -- but I didn't find it very noisy like some of the other comments on TripAdvisor, but our room had air conditioning so we slept with the windows closed. However one word of caution, there was no air conditioning in the triple room that my friends booked -- they were having some "issues" with the one side of the building (there are two parts to the hotel -- we were staying in the other part) but Icould not even see a unit in their room to "have trouble with" -- they had to sleep with the windows open and they did find it noisy. As I said, we booked a "comfort" room (a few $$ more than a standard) so perhaps that made the difference and the fact that theirs was a triple room. My other friends in the King room had a comfortable stay with good a/c.

Room Tip: Rooms off the street side and with air conditoning
