Like most respondents, I was nervous about staying here due to the negative comments but it fit the budget and the location was great - our group had a total of three rooms booked (one queen, one king, and one triple). We booked a comfort room (queen) which is exactly what it was. The bathroom was large and fairly new and the Air Conditioning worked great. We requested a room off the street, but were unable to be accommodated -- but I didn't find it very noisy like some of the other comments on TripAdvisor, but our room had air conditioning so we slept with the windows closed. However one word of caution, there was no air conditioning in the triple room that my friends booked -- they were having some "issues" with the one side of the building (there are two parts to the hotel -- we were staying in the other part) but Icould not even see a unit in their room to "have trouble with" -- they had to sleep with the windows open and they did find it noisy. As I said, we booked a "comfort" room (a few $$ more than a standard) so perhaps that made the difference and the fact that theirs was a triple room. My other friends in the King room had a comfortable stay with good a/c.

Room Tip: Rooms off the street side and with air conditoning

Hotel Athanol is ageing rapidly judging by reviews. Without style of Fawlty Towers the hotel is part of a passing age. It seems not to be earning enough to support basic maintenance appropriate for the price charged

The room aircon was broken so I requested they might consider a reduced price. This request was met with a hollow laugh, To add insult to injury the window could not be opened

Nor could WiFi [Weefy in French] be opened in the rooms except in the bar where it was out of order with no service available. To access a power point it was necessary to climb under a table in Reception beside the bar so being a bit disabled I had to request the friendly receptionist to get under the table. I was quite relieved when she eventually managed to get out in reverse

The bar is pleasant enough but has no coffee facility as alternative to breakfast

The toilet beside the breakfast room had no soap or paper so no point in testing the water

Reception seemed crowded with two large American couples agitatedly waiting for a taxi. Y all know Americans hate waiting. I guess the Hotels regulars are visitors at the nearby Marche du Vin for wine tasting and do not like to walk far-especially on the way home

Location is good with easy parking across the road and several restaurants near

The Bistro recommended by Reception was not up to to its aspirations [reviewed separately]

Athanol is ready for takeover

Room Tip: Bring your own aircon

Like a previous respondent, I was a little fearful of what we would find but was pleasantly surprised.
Having asked for a room away from the noise of the street, we were given one towards the rear, which was perfectly quiet.
The room itself was large enough and had a very comfortable bed.
The staff were charming & helpful.
Where the hotel let itself down was the attention to detail. Soap in the public toilet was left empty for the 2 days we we there and the aircon in our room did not work, although that was clearly known before our arrival.
Breakfast look uninspiring, and to obtain wifi you needed to be within 2 metres of reception...preferably standing on 1 leg.

I wasn't really looking forward to staying here because of some of the negative comments , but had a very pleasant experience. The location is great-near all there is to see in Beaune. My room was very comfortable, and quiet. The bathroom was nice and clean, plenty of hot water, too. The breakfast room was beautiful and the breakfast was excellent. I will go back.

Beaune was the highlight of our visit to France and Hotel Athanor was a perfect place from which to enjoy it. Everything was just a short walk away (don't miss the Marche Aux Vins tasting experience!). Our triple room was actually a suite with two nice sized rooms, one with a bed and full bath, the other with a fold-out bed and half bath. Our only complaint was that the fold-out bed had a huge metal bar in the middle that made it very uncomfortable. The staff were all very friendly and kind; they even let us put a few items in their refrigerator.

The location is central close to the township within the ring-road. The rooms are small but cosy. Most of the time is spent out exploring Beaune which is close by, so it is a perfect spot to walk from.

The staff are very friendly and helpful.
