Owner description: Although this historic hospital, which dates back to the 1400s, still functions as a retirement home, its primary significance now lies as a tourist attraction.

The exquisitely tiled roof alone would make this a must-see destination, but the interior artwork is unbelievable for a hospital. The preserved beds and medical instruments are a bonus.

This is the top attraction in Beaune, and well-deservedly. To think that a hospital has been in use for 500 years just boggles the mind, and to see the quality of the preservation makes it an excellent visit. We were just so impressed with the beauty of this place, the art and the building itself. I think anyone would enjoy this thoroughly.

A beautiful building and well preserved set in the lovely town of Beaune. Wonderful stone and wood work along with great, characteristic Burgundy roof tiles. While the building itself is stunning, the display of the Vander Weyden alter piece literally took my breath away... the movable magnifying glass that helps illuminate particular portions of the painting is fantastic.

The audio tour through this history-filled old hospital is excellent, giving insights into the art, architecture, medical practices and the founders. Allow two hours for the whole tour if you spend time listening to the options for "more details" although you can always crunch it down to 45 minutes to an hour. Don't miss the historic medical instruments (creepy) and descriptions of the medicines and practices (sometimes a bit icky).

Of course you can enjoy just the wine and food in Beaune but the Hospice is a true "must see". Very interesting history. Very good audio tour.
