Owner description: Although this historic hospital, which dates back to the 1400s, still functions as a retirement home, its primary significance now lies as a tourist attraction.

Wasn't sure what to expect but was somewhat surprised in what I saw. Whilst the commentary on the audio phones, which were complementary, the information provided on the tape was somewhat overwhelming.
However, the architecture and the history of the place is unique. An appreciation for its history and the wonderful work of those who gave so much to help others was obvious.
Well worth visiting- and different.

Very well put together museum. Could probably get through the whole thing in about an hour's time. They did a good job with the English translation on the headsets.

We happen to have stumbled onto this museum. We were very glad we did. It had a self guided audio tour that described this church hospital museum. The museum and artifacts are great and extremely interesting. Well worth the trip.

This is one of the many Hospices in France and probably the most famous. The building is a magnificent example of the regional architecture with the colored tile roof. The inside is absolutely worth the visit and it goes through the history of the Hospices from its founding. Rooms have carefully recreated scenes from centuries ago, which makes the visit very pleasant as you can imagine what the building looked like at the time. You should take the audioguide event if you don't intend to listen to the whole thing because the explanations inside the rooms are fairly limited (and the place can get crowded in the summer). I have done it with the guided tours years ago and it was well worth it. The visit is good for children as long as you take the time to explain what the place is about (our 7 year old seemed genuinely interested).
Also there is the huge Rogier Van der Weyden altarpiece with a giant magnifier which allows you to see the details - do not miss it (even if the crowd in the room can be a little frustrating)..

The hospital, known as the Hotel Dieu, was founded by Nicholas Rodin and surrounds a cobble courtyard; It has diamond patterned roofs with coloured tiles (rather gaudy for my taste!). The buildings are well preserved and furnished. The audio guide is free and of excellent quality - don't miss the superb painting of the Last Judgment by Roger van der Weijden!
