From the banks of the river Yonne and up to the cathedral and abbey the old town presents a maze of little streets and alleys with ancient stone and half-timbered houses abounding. On the day we visited it was hot and humid (29C) and we lacked the energy to take it all in. It was lovely to see the little children by the river playing in the fountains - if only we were young again! We parked right by the river (metered, cheap) and walked up to the abbey and cathedral. Restaurants and cafes are present to satisfy one’s hunger and thirst, and the tourist office is right on the quay.

Strolling down the streets of the old city is such a great trip back to old times & history. Enjoying the old architecture and narrow streets is easy.

We enjoyed wondering around this town, full of historuc streets, old timbered buildings and many little shops. The walk along the river was very pleasurable with views of the cathedrals, bridges, biots, swans and city views. We travelled in early January so it was dark and cloudy and the plants were not out in flower, but still a pleasant day out seeing a new town!

First, go to the parking area on the opposite bank of the Yonne with a wide angle lens on your camera, to capture the amazing views of the old town on the other bank. There are some steep streets, but the town is small, well preserved and easy to get around in a 1-2 hour visit. Could be very congested in peak season.

If you like old medieval buildings etc then this city is a must do. Try to follow the recommended walk path. The whole area is impressive and one of the best we have seen in all of Europe. The town is very clean and well presented. Make sure you see the clock tower.
