“OK for one night”
Reviewed December 4, 2013

Auxerre was our last stop before heading into Paris. We wanted a hotel that was easy to drive to and close to the main sights of the town. Our rental car's GPS found the hotel easily, which was good because I think relying entirely on a paper map would have been difficult. We were able to park for free across the street, and the road construction mentioned by others was still on-going in late October 2013.

The Marine Quarter of Auxerre begins just a block or two from the hotel, and it was an interesting area to walk through to reach the historical sights farther up the hill.

Our room was on the top floor, and we had to be careful we didn't hit our head on a beam supporting the mansard roof. We had nice views of the river. The décor and furnishings of our room were very average and rather plain. The bathroom appeared to be recently renovated.

We were not advised that the hotel's restaurant would be closed during our visit. It probably didn't matter, but it would have been nice to know in advance. The breakfast was just average but certainly adequate. The reception staff was friendly and helpful.

We were a group of four that stayed for two nights. The staff are friendly, and it was easy to get to. We arrived on foot from the train station and was less than a 15 minute walk over the river and along the river bank. There is some construction outside along the river bank but this did not worry us and the hotel cannot help that. It was about a 5 - 10 minute walk into the old town so perfect location, especially with the view of the river which was lovely.

The rooms were clean, serviced daily, and when we wanted to have some local cheeses and bread in one of our rooms they kindly gave us plates and cutlery.

I would stay there again and recommend it to others if arriving by train.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the river if you want a beautiful view.

Word of caution: a nightmare getting around the hotel because of road construction, especially of you don't know the area. The gps was taking us all over the place because it was telling us to take turns where it was either blocked off or it was a one way street. I would stay out of the city, if possible. It is within walking distance from the center of the city. We had no reservations for the evening and this was the only thing that was available. It's located right across from the Yonne River. The person at the desk was very friendly and nice. The room was decent in size for a hotel, the furniture dated but it did have a King size bed and a bathtub. Breakfast is not included and will cost you 12.50 Euros p .p., as is the parking at 8 Euros per night. You can perhaps find parking on the street for free. I would. Or stay here again or recommend it.

The Le Maxime hotel is not easy to reach if you are arriving by car as our cab driver pointed out, the downtown area is undergoing reconstruction in a number of places, and road works make driving around rather difficult. Once you reach it however, it's safe to say you won't need a car if you're planning on exploring the town: the hotel is right on the shore, and conveniently only 5-10 minutes walk to the old town center (the way there is pretty much uphill however). Views from the hotel are either facing the river, or opposite. The rooms facing the shore have a nice view, but obviously a bit more street noise, though not disturbing. Rooms are equipped with climate control, a double bed, flat screen TV and a bathroom. Furniture and all facilities reflect the style of this historic hotel building. Rooms are very clean and bathrooms contain a combined tub and shower facility. The only thing the room was missing from my point of view were bedside wall outlets -- something that many older hotels don't have, and you're forced to chose between having the light on or charging your phone..

The staff at the front desk was extremely helpful and made our stay pleasant. Free wifi is available in the hotel, however it did work reliably only about half the time in my experience.

Nasty hotel. Expensive and drab. They took a booking for a double and a single room without bothering to mention that a single room is the same price as a double. Extra charge to use car park. Fleeced!

We arrived tired after a long drive. Auxerre is somewhere that we stop frequently, usually using one of the big hotel chains. Le Maxime was a welcome change. We were made to feel welcome, prices were reasonable, breakfast was good and we were directed to an excellent restaurant in the area by the reception staff. The rooms were spacious and clean, giving us a good reast before continuing our journey. One of the better hotels in the area.

I returned for a second stay at Le Maxime. The hotel is on the edge of the Yonne River, a short walk from the centre of Auxerre. There are many restaurants nearby. The hotel has parking. Access is presently a bit difficult with major improvements to the River bank area. Once this is complete the Maxime will be in a superb position. The furnishings and decor are a bit dated.

The bedroom and bathroom were of a good size, and very well presented. Breakfast is a very satisfactory self service buffet.

There was a leak from the ceiling into the reception area whilst we were staying. I am sure this is fixed by now.

The tariff is good value for money. I would stay there again and recommend to friends.

Room Tip: River side room is best. Vey little road noise and a nice outlook.
