“Weekend break in Bourgogne, France.”

My wife and i stayed for two nights in Hotel Les Ursulines in Autun. Quietly situated in the old town part of Autun near the cathedral. Friendly and helpful reception. Our room of type "chambre luxe" was on the first floor, situated on the corner opposite to the reception, overlooking the inner garden : AC, television, seperate spacious bathroom, a small desk in the room and a very comfortable and big double bed. All clean. Room is cleaned during the day. Breakfast with a choice of continental and English style, in buffet form. Very tasteful! Free wifi is available but didn't worked in my room, only on ground floor.

The hotel is lovely with great views and a super big garden. The breakfast was the best we had during our tour of Burgundy with a lovely lady serving. I really can't fault the public areas which were well above the standard of a 3* hotel.

Food was compared to the Manoir aux Quat' Saisons - and quite rightly.

Unfortunately, the room was shabby and tired - but we didn't mind that because of the location and the public areas. However, the bed was very comfy and we had a great night's sleep.

We arrived here after a terrible experience in Lyon, so we were relieved to find such a pleasant place in a small village of the countryside, with beautifully ivy-covered walls, a nice restaurant and clean rooms. The restaurant in particular is very good, especially escargots, served into tiny pots instead of the usual shells.

The hotel looked good on the website so we thought it might be worth paying a bit extra for a town centre location. It is very central and it has some nice views. The hotel is being modernised and there is some evidence of work in progress. We couldn't work out if our room had been modernised in an old style or had just been well looked after.

Some details let the hotel down, for example the grass in the garden was full of weed and in need of a cut, in the bar damage to the decorations following a water leak had not been addressed.

Our biggest complaint is that our requests for menus with our pre dinner drinks were ignored. So instead we went into the town square and had a nice meal at one of the three restaurants on the square.

The next morning the €147 hotel bill - including extras for car parking and a dog, but no food - seemed a bit expensive. To pay the bill we had to go in search of a cashpoint as the Hotel's machine for taking credit card payments was not working.

Throughout the receptionist remained professional and showed concern for us as guests - she deserves a better employer.

Room Tip: The garden view rooms have the best aspect - ask to see the room first.

Stayed for a wedding at Autun Cathedral - a short walk away. Had a junior suite room - somewhat cramped but nice and characterful. Staff overall positive and helpful. Nice grounds with good views. Hotel wedged into this Hilltop town. Underground parking. Not the Ritz but good for a village hotel.

We have just returned from a week at Hôtel les Ursulines in Autun, France. We had a fantastic pre-holiday experience! It was our first time at the hotel, and like all “first-times”, we were a little nervous, not knowing what to expect.

We upgraded to a suite, #303. It was awesome! We had a nice sized terrace with table and chairs, next to the old chapel, attached to the hotel, with an exterior view of the stain-glassed windows. It was beautiful. What a nice way to wake up in the morning! Our room was very comfortable, with a king-sized bed, sitting area, small refrigerator and television. There was an enormous amount of space, given the size of French rooms – normally.

The dining experience at the hotel was beyond belief. We dined at the hotel every night of our stay, and were treated to some of the most amazing gastronomic meals – of our life. Wow! What an opportunity! I could go on and on about the food, or gaining five pounds in a week from eating the meals, but to be fair . . . You must experience the dining yourself. You will not be disappointed.

The hotel and restaurant staff was courteous, accommodating and looked for ways to make guests feel comfortable and at home. It was a perfect holiday, in a fantastic hotel, with a lot of nice people.

FYI è The hotel is undergoing some renovation, but it was mostly hidden from the guests. We were able to look into a few of the rooms that had been updated, and they were comfortable and welcoming to the eyes.

Room Tip: Ask for 303 - the suite. We loved the room.

This hotel is of good quality, despite other reviews to the contrary. Admittedly, it is rather old and tired-looking, but we found the service to be very good with knowledgable, helpful staff. I used to live in Autun and the restaurant is popular and does excellent food - this has not changed. Do remember that the building is a conversion, so all the rooms are of different sizes and shapes - this is rural France, not the USA!
