“Perfect location, tricky parking, overall good stay.”
Reviewed June 29, 2014

Hotel is located inside city walls, next to the fortress of St. Malo. This mean it can be very noisy outside if your room is facing main street, due to lots of bars and restaurants are located just few meters away.
Shops, restaurants, bars, harbour, city walls - everything within a few minute walk, very convenient.
There is no parking provided, so had to park on the street. Was kinda tricky. Make sure you pay for parking, it's 17 euro fine.
My room was on the top floor, facing quiet street, so wasn't that noisy from the outside, but due to paper-thin walls, I was able to hear every sound from my neighbours. But nevertheless had a good sleep once they went to bed.
Staff at the reception spoke bad english, but were very friendly and helpful.
Room was clean and tidy, everything as it should be.

When checking-in, hotel asked me for my credit card and pre-authorized whole amount I had to pay. On check-out I paid in cash for my stay.
When I checked my bank account few days later, I found out the amount hotel pre-authorized is still blocked. They kept them blocked for 1 month exactly.
Hotel explanation was: ''For every booking, we have to made an authorization on the credit card to be shure for the garantee. It was on the 7th of May 2014 you said, the bank cancel it until one month after. It's not charge, only an authorization.''
Be careful, you might end up with your money blocked for 1 month, because hotel needs a garantee?

We had to ask for the croissants to be topped up as there was only 2 left, the orange juice was nearly empty and there were no juice glasses. It took 30 mins for this to happen and then we had no apology just 'I need your room number'

Recently, we enjoyed a comfortable room facing a quiet side street at the very well located Hotel L'Univers within the beautiful fortress in St. Malo. Views and vignettes are readily available everywhere in St. Malo, as are shops and bistros. Early June is not at all crowded; that comes later in the summer. A lovely place with very cordial people. We will certainly return.

Room Tip: Our room facing a quiet side street was restful. Roomy shower and bath. Very good restaurants all wi...

3 night stay as part of a Brittany Ferries golf trip.

It's a pleasant hotel, but very quirky. Rooms were clean, as was the ensuite, but low doors, steps into shower etc meant lots of bruises if not paying attention to where you were going.

Right in the old walled part of St Malo, it certainly has character, lots of bars and restaurants close by, the harbour is also within walking distance as are some local beaches. This does mean it can be noisy outside and the rooms do not have aircon, so windows need to be kept open at this time of year which makes it worse. Earplugs required if you want a decent night sleep.

Breakfast had a good continental offering, no hot option.

Parking is very hit and miss as it's on street parking and you have to pay, so could be expensive if you left your car their all day and didn't venture outside of the town.

Nice play to stay, would come back again as a group or a couple, but don't really see it as a place you'd bring the whole family to stay for an extended stay.

Room Tip: Apparently room 104 is best avoided!

I've stopped here for 3 nights on 3 separate golf trips in the past 5 years. It's in a great (touristy) location just inside the city walls and although parking is an issue anywhere around here it is probably the best served in terms of the pay & display car parks with lots of spaces within a 5 minute walk.
The staff have always been very friendly and more than happy to help. I've even had quite a few laughs with them. The hotel itself isn't (and I don't like writing this) particularly special and some of the rooms really don't have the correct furniture in (when you can't open the bathroom door properly because the bed is too close etc). The breakfast buffet selection is quite poor to be fair although what there is is quite tasty.
The main reason we go back to the l'Univers each time we're in St Malo is it's bar - comfortably the best in St Malo. It has a spacious covered outdoor section which is always packed with locals, too. The drinks aren't the cheapest (but tell me where the drinks are cheap in St Malo?!?) but the service is excellent and atmosphere superb.

This hotel is in a great location in the old part of town inside the city walls. We had room 303 facing the square. It got noisy with the window open but ear plugs fixed that. The room was small but we expected that. The bathroom had a tiny light and it was very hard to see. The was no soap shampoo or conditioner so bring you own. The breakfast was reasonably priced at 5 euro each. Parking is hard to come by. You can drive up to the hotel to drop off bags and you then need to go outside the city wall and take your chances. Try and park early. The hotel has a TINY lift. Two cases and one person and it is full. Only good for getting bags to your floor.

The hotel looks tired but the rooms were clean.

Stayed here for 2 nights on the 3rd&4th of May. The hotel is in a perfect location right near all the restaurants and shops inside the old town of Saint Malo. It is also about a 2 minute walk to the beach and about a 10 minute walk from the ferry terminal. We stayed here quite a few years ago and from what we can remember the rooms seem to be a lot more modern now, nice carpets and a more modern feel decor wise all round, lots of english tv channels if you want them!.just one downfall is NO Kettle in the room which would have been really nice as the breakfast was 10 Euro's per person and we felt was over the top for what you get. Don't be afraid of the lift it is tiny but works well you just have to go up 2 at a time! They do have free wifi ask for the code from reception (the code only lasts for a day and then you have to get a new one) but it is hit and miss signal comes and goes and each time we left the hotel we had to put the code back in each time we returned. They also have a luggage room for you to leave all your bags on your last day after check out so you can enjoy your last day wandering around. There is a carrefour supermarket around the corner for a bottle of wine etc for the room to keep your costs down, the shop is below street level but you should see the sign for it at street level.

Room Tip: We had room 422, top floor and only 1 room next to us, the higher you are away from the street noise...
