“Great location for a short break”
Reviewed February 24, 2014

This is a mature established hotel. Situated at the main gate to the Intramuros and near to shops, restaurants and the wall. It could not be more convenient. There is parking meter parking nearby, but you are better parking outside the city walls on the harbour side (3 min. walk to hotel). The hotel is under going refubishment to the rooms. Nothing fancy, but a lot more comfortable and better on the eye than it was. Th erooms are spread over three floors. There is one small lift (& I mean small!). Public areas are dominated by the bar to the front of the hotel which remains the meeting place for everyone (great atmosphere). There is no restaurant for lunch or dinner. Just breakfast which is more than adequate. Staff are really friendly. There is Wi-Fi. Don't go with any great expectations of grandeur and you will be pleasantly surprised. Probably the best location within St Malo and a great ambiance.

Room Tip: Request a room to the rear of the hotel if you want quiet (bar/restaurants/parking at front) althoug...

Having stayed in many hotels priced more or less the same as Hotel l'Univers, I must say that I did not find this was value for money. The room was small and basic. Situation is very good but I'd look elsewhere next time.

We stayed for 2 nights in a double room. The location of this hotel was perfect. An extremely short walk to restaurants and sights. Breakfast left a little to be desired but the quality of the hotel made up for it. Very friendly staff who spoke perfect English.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front of the building for a bit of a view.

The breakfast buffet cost €10, but was good value. We stayed for a week and it was a memorable and enjoyable stay. The hotel must be in the classic French style - our room was certainly described as such - and is beautifully situated within the great walls around St Malo old town and with the Hotel de Ville just opposite and the tourist office just outside the walls. The hotel staff were extremely friendly.

There was no coffee-making facility and we felt we would take a small kettle next time. The bathroom was huge but its floor was two steps higher than the bedroom floor - and the plumbing could be improved to get hot water quicker. The restaurant, recommended in my guide book, no longer exists (though there are plenty of restaurants nearby). The only English-language TV channel was CNN.

Room Tip: (There is no swimming pool but the beach is close by. We did not use room service - it may exist.)

Third time we have stayed here.
Arrived off the ferry booked in around 9.00am and room ready.
Found the room was on two levels as I tripped on my way to Bathroom! Shower has sliding doors and no handrail or shelves to put anything.
Staff always helpful and happy.
Breakfast not over the top but good enough.
Location by the city walls very good.
All in all a very good hotel and will be returning

Room 111
Staff most helpful - we arrived direct from the Brittany Ferries journey a little after 6.30am!!!
Luggage carefully stowed away so we could enjoy the day unloaded

The room was small but comfortable - unusually there was a large step into the ensuite which was problematic when we forgot it was there!

The shower too had a very high step in to t which again was difficult to negotiate.

Clean tidy and fresh.

Quite hotel but the bar downstairs was busy - nice and buzzing.

Breakfast was a standard buffet but beautifully presented

We will be back - but perhaps not in Room 111

Room Tip: Avoid 111 as the intern; steps are problemmatic

We went to St Marlo with Brittany ferries for a short break, it started badly crashes on a38 we arrived late to board the ferry, but good old brittany ferries held the ferry until everyone arrived this was great customer service. We had a great cabin on board with complimentary soft drinks bowl of fruit and breakfast all included. We arrived fresh and ready for our break we arrived at hotel very early and check in was supposed to be at 3pm but our room was ready and they let us have it six hrs early the room was small but compact rather dark two days would be the most I would stay in that room but it served its purpose. I would say if you have any mobility problems don't have room 114 as you have to step into the shower over a foot in hight and getting out was a bit dodgy a step is needed. The breakfast was continental ok but I wish there was some bacon. The place itself was magical and worth a visit. The restaurants were great the food was tasty and good value. The bar was busy with a lot of smokers and the door to the hotel was left open and the smoke could be smelt all over

Room Tip: Not the one we had a room at the front are best
