“Well situated good hotel”

We were pleasantly surprised with this hotel after reading adverse comments on this site . We found it comfortable and welcoming . The bed was really comfy and after a good nights sleep the breakfast was good . The staff were friendly and the bar staff excellent . Ideally situated for a holiday in Saint - Malo we will definitely return .

A great place to stay and enjoy the delights of St Malo at night! You are at the centre of the action here. However the decor is tired and the carpets need replacing.

You do have to abandon your car outside the city walls (which we are used to doing in historic locations) so be prepared to trek to your car if you have one. Do not use the underground car park as this works out very expensive at around £20 a night. Instead park in any of the gated car parks which are outside the town walls for a much better price.

Breakfast was good and set us off in good spirits for our return journey to the UK.

Booked into this Hotel via Booking.com. Staff very helpful (Emilie on Reception) when the twin room with view of castle turned out to have a Double bed and small single bed rather than the expected twins. No problem with double but the single not much bigger than child size and not at all suitable for the slower of 2 burly blokes on a cycling holiday. Emilie got it sorted and changed our room..no problem. She also arranged secure storage for our rusty steeds (Bikes). Breakfast 9 euros was a varied selection of suitable cereals fruit eggs bread croissant fruit juice an hot drinks, a tad expensive but worth it. Lively in square during evening but close to ferry for morning departure. Would use this hotel again.

Room Tip: Rooms at side and rear of building would be quieter if noise from square would be a problem for you...

I found this hotel simply perfect.
We were 3, and we had a beautiful, very large room with an ancient fireplace and a nice view on place Chateaubriand and the castle.
Its room are very spatious, and there was also an armachair!!!
Take a look of the hotel's bar, it's very nice

We had a good deal from Brittany Ferries on a one night stay and chose Hotel de L'Univers simply because I stayed there when I was a child and it was time to rekindle happy memories of St Malo.

As there are no longer two ferries serving this route, we arrived in the morning from an overnight crossing. The hotel staff are well prepared for this and although they don't check you in, they do let you leave your luggage in a baggage room adjacent to and in close proximity to the reception desk.

After spending many hours exploring the old town, we naturally ended up back at our hotel before the check-in time of 3pm.

As it was sunny we sat outside, but enjoying a drink may require a little patience as the hotel seems to employ only one waiter and one barman to serve a very busy area. That said, with such short staffing, I'm surprised there isn't more of a wait. The guys work hard to ensure you're not left getting frustrated.
Of the drinks list, there is an excellent choice of cocktails, champagne cocktails both of which we sampled.
The bar, decked out in wood and old photographs has an atmosphere of a bygone era.

The real test for me was always going to be the rooms given that I hadn't visited in over 20 years. Although room 109 was difficult to unlock and lock it has been refurbished to a good standard, although green carpet and green bathroom may leave something to be desired for some.
I don't criticise the hotel for the iron burn on the carpet, but more the baffoon who caused it. However, the lack of tea and coffee making facilities isn't good - for me, it's a basic in any hotel room, especially at the rates charged by Hotel de L'Univers.

If your room is not facing the square of Place Chateaubriand then you'll have a very comfortable and peaceful night's sleep - for my wife and I it was a better night's sleep than where we live!!

Breakfast is typically continental, but certainly more generous than years gone by with facilities for boiling your own egg, toasting your own bread and good strong coffee for an early morning rise for that check-in with Brittany Ferries.

All-in-all I would recommend Hotel de l'Univers, but they don't get the five TripAdvisor blobs because I don't expect to leave any hotel room just to get a cup of coffee which I should be able to make as soon as I get up!

Room Tip: When booking you should ask to not be facing Place Chateaubriand - it's a lively square with bar...

A great location and a very spacious (although drably decorated) room. Clean, recently refurbished bathroom, lots of room for a family of 5. Breakfast generous and well organised. Good easy to use free Wi-fi, helpful polite staff. Cheap and cheerful. Not a luxurious stay but perfectly adequate and reasonably priced.

This was an overnighter for us at the end of a long holiday in France, and in order to catch the morning ferry to Portsmouth, so maybe we were a bit travel weary but this was a disappointing hotel. Not knowing St Malo at all, we hadn't reckoned on the sheer impenetrability of the Old Town. After a fruitless and embarrassing attempt to drive through a packed pedestrian area we did what the hotel failed to warn us to do, which was to find a parking place on a nearby quay and carry our bags to the hotel. Overnight parking is simple and reasonably secure due to numbers of local police on the streets. You might need to queue for a while to get in but parking is free after 21.00 so we paid 7 euros 50 on departure.

The Hotel is absolutely in the centre of everything, so if you enjoy the buzz you'll love the location. Surrounded by bars, restaurants and stalls of all kinds you could easily do without a car here and walk pretty well everywhere. However the attractions are greater outside the hotel than inside which has a distinctly run-down feel. The red carpets had seen more than a few cigarettes ground in over the years. The receptionist was friendly, helpful and bilingual and we were directed but not shown to our room as there seemed to be very few staff around. The corridors are a bit of a maze, and the lift was absolutely tiny - just room for two large bags as long as you arranged them carefully and pressed yourself against the back. The outlook of the room was exactly as described with good views of the square below and the castle opposite. The decor was 1970's but without any flair and the bed was comfortable but hideously surrounded by an enormous surround that came straight from a Peter Sellers film. There was no air conditioning so in summer you need to leave the windows open. The bars below didn't close until 2.00am, and the first coach party of tourists enjoyed a noisy cigarette in the yard below at 5.30am, so not a quiet night. The room furnishings were pretty random and catered for a wide variety of tastes, in fact the room - which was spacious had a faint sense of store-room about it. No tea or coffee making facilities were provided and the shower and toilet were in separate and rather cramped rooms. Free wifi worked perfectly and fast so no complaints there. Breakfast was adequate and plentiful, but overall we thought that for the price we would have done better to go for the greater consistency and quality of a chain hotel with very little difference in price. Plenty of character but lacking in virtue!
