This hotel has so much going for it, but it lets itself down so badly that I can't recommend guests staying here. We spent 525 euros for a 3 night stay in what can best be described as a down-at-heel, tired old hotel that needs better management.

Starting with the positives: it is situated in a beautiful location, in an historic and impressive building, with extensive gardens. Very much the classic French experience that we were seeking.

But, unfortunately, the negatives far outweigh the positives. Shoddy (but once beautiful) rooms . It was the details like a broken hair dryer, no shower, non-functioning TV and only 5 hangers in the closet that made us angry. At that price it is reasonable to expect to have the basics covered.

Most importantly of all, I felt the owners were taking advantage of us. They would not quote me a rate over the phone, but said a room would be assigned upon arrival. The room that was assigned? The most expensive luxury room, of course, despite the hotel apparently being half empty.

Breakfast costs 11 euro, and is a very basic cold buffet. The breakfast is mandatory, unless you expressly say in advance that you are not wishing to take it the next day. We were charged for one of the days we didn't have breakfast, and indeed on the final day we sat down in the empty dining room and ate the bread out of principle of losing our 22 euros.

I did mention all these issues to the owner of the hotel before making my views public on TripAdvsor. Her response? Nobody, in her experience, wants a shower in a hotel room. And the mandatory breakfast policy is posted, so the mistake was entirely ours.

And finally, her opinion is that the reviews on TripAdvisor are fake, not written by genuine guests.

Unfortunately, that is not true, as I'm sure you will agree.

We recently stayed at the Valmarin and enjoyed our stay - the property is about 15 mins walk from St Malo but is in a nice neighbourhood and is extremely quiet at night time. The property itself is beautiful and there is a lovely park at the back. We would say that the rooms are quite tired - our carpet was dirty and we barely received any TV channels on our old TV. In addition the breakfast at 11 euros each is way overpriced and the owners were very keen to enquire if we wanted it each day (they even tried to charge us for three when we had only had two). There are some nice places on Saint Servan high street (about 8 mins walk away) where you can get coffee and croissants and places in Saint Malo where the same breakfast can be had for 4 euros. On our last night we were dismayed to be told that we had to park our car on the high street as we were leaving at 5.30 the next morning beacause the gates are not activated until 6. Overall it is a nice property but overpriced in its current condition.

We came upon this 18th century hotel almost in desperation looking for somewhere to stay before catching the early morning ferry home. It is very expensive and breakfast is definitely over priced but the setting is idyllic, very quiet and an amazing atmosphere, just wondering at its long history. Not really mod cons but this difficult to combine with such a period piece. We would stay again but either skip breakfast or have it served in the dining room as there was nowhere to eat it in the room despite the great size of the "chamber." The television was very small and difficult to see from the distance of the bed! The toilet is miles away from the bathroom and one of the beds squeaked all night but otherwise no complaints!

Lovely, elegant hotel in a quiet area. No problems with service or facilities which were very good.
However, the entrance to the gardens and parking area was through electronically operated gates and over a raised area of driveway. Unfortunately the gate mechanism embedded in the drive ripped the exhaust from our car. It was obvious from scratches on the drive that there was a problem and we were told that there had been a previous incident which was reported to the Marie of St Malo.
The hotel disclaimed all responsibility.
A costly experience!

A little hard to find, but woth the search; this lovely bed and brakfast is set in an 18th century villa in the heart of Saint-Servan, right outside Saint-Malo. The rooms are huge, with bathrooms to match, with separate toilet. Our large french windows overlook a lovely secluded garden and the nights were absolutely quiet. The beds were comfortable and the amenities quite adequate. As with many hotels in France, there is no shower per se, only a 'telephone' in the huge bathtub - and no shower curtain!

There is no internet access, and forget about digital phone... you'll have to find somewhere else to make your overseas calls.
The hotel doesn't have a restaurant so they are able to direct you to some fabulous restaurants on the harbour; do not miss taking a walk along the beach at sunset, then mosey over to some of the finest fresh fish and seafood restaurants you are likely to encounter.
Breakfast at the Valmarin was rather disappointing; lots of sweet danish partries, yesterday's bread and the smallest croissants ever made. But it is served in a beautiful period dining room. Take in the view and forget the food!
We liked the Valmarin for its proximity to Saint-Malo; you don't want to stay 'intra-muros' or inside the fortified city of Saint-Malo proper; it is noisy and very expensive. The Valmarin is an excellent alternative; I would recommend it and stay there again.
