If you are looking for a hotel next to St Malo intra-muros with a sea view, Oceania is your only option. We started our trip by booking at the wrong hotel, the Escale Oceania which is much cheaper and of poorer quality (beware, both hotels are in the same street and bear the same name!). We quickly relocated at the "real" Oceania in a wonderful room with unbelievable sea view. We booked off-season so rooms are very affordable. Service is flawless, rooms are clean and comfortable, there is even an outdoor jacuzzi to relax after walking the wonderful city of St Malo all day long. Breakfast is ok but I am sure there are better options around. Oceania St Malo is the best of both worlds, outside of intra-muros so overlooking the sea yet a walking distance from the historical city. Very safe choice to start with La cité corsaire.

Beware the Oceania website. There are two Oceania hotels in St Malo, in the same road. The escale oceania is the poor relation (tatty, and worn out) and can easily be booked by mistake. The staff then pretend the hotels are independant and only by insisting did they grudgingly help me rebook to the four star oceania. The receptionist said no-one else confused the two hotels, then when I was at reception a woman came in saying she had confused the two hotels also....
Anyway the oceania hotel is also disappointing. The barman was hopeless and we walked out after waiting an age to get a drink. I also don't know why they can't provide a courtesy tray in the rooms to make a drink. We had the breakfast early and so avoided the later bunfight for the buffet breakfast laid out in the bar. It was very cramped and they set up an overspill in a conference room which just seemed poor design. The balcony design means the neighbouring room can look straight into your room from their balcony. The hotel TA replies say that the design make the most of the sea views but it is just stupid design. There is a hot tub stuck in an interior courtyard for anyone who wants to sit in a tub in view of everyone but again I reckon the person who designed the hotel just had a very bad day at the office. Hotels in St Malo don't have to try that hard - people just keep going there, but it is a shame when the hotels don't try.
It should all be so much better. Perhaps there are other hotels who are trying. We won't be back to either Oceania.

We stayed two separate nights in December, in transit between Jersey and the south of France. Good location for the old town.

Rooms clean and maybe rather basic but well-appointed bathrooms though my wife found the frosted glass partitions disconcerting! Separate toilets. I imagine some rooms could be noisy especially near the lifts and /or facing the main road.

The big plus is the staff - unfaiingly pleasant, courteous and helpful.

Sunday morning breakfast rather hectic due to sheer numbers of people but staff worked hard to seat newcomers.

Room Tip: Stay away from lifts and main road.

A very quiet, modern, clean and pleasant hotel by the sea, within walking distance of the walled town.
Staff were polite and attentive
Bed was "Out of this world" for comfort!
Good room facilities, but missed being able to make our own tea or coffee.
An excellent breakfast set us on our way.
Would definately stay again!

stayed 3 nights, great location, top floor room, good view, good room, great staff, and a nice breakfast, but if you want a good night's sleep, this ain't the place for you.
Soundproofing is awful as rooms are very noisy, you can hear footsteps etc from adjoining rooms, furniture being moved etc, as no carpet on floor. Walls must be made of paper machet.

Room Tip: get top floor room, due to poor soundproofing, you'll get no overhead noise

My friends and I really enjoyed our night in Oceania. We had a glass wall facing the ocean and it was so great that I din't want to step out of the room. Everything is perfectly new and stylish and the bathroom with a separate toilet is absolutely comfortable and soundless by the way! Love it! Absolutely must to order an ocean view room!

Great location, very near to the old part of the city; right on the beach, lots of great restaurants nearby. Very friendly staff. A quite decent breakfast, which is unusual in these kinds of hotels. Beautiful decor in the bar / restaurant.

My *only* quibble is we stayed 4 days / 3 nights, and they had the same 3 CDs on rotation in the lobby/restaurant/hallways/elevator for the entire 4 days. I think i heard Phil Collins' greatest hits at least 6 times. I know that staff become deaf to this sort of thing, but it's time for new music guys :)
