“Splendid, you get more than you expect!”
Reviewed March 4, 2014 via mobile

The location of the hotel is perfect! The staff was extremely helpful and be rooms were quite large and comfy, the colors will remind of the saint malo theme. The space provided and amenities in the rooms will make u feel very comfortable. The tourism office and major attractions are all within walking distance, if not to say at the front door of the hotel. To sum it up, I Highly recommend this hotel BUT make sure you get a sea view room and be clear about it!

This was a return trip to a hotel at which we hadn't stayed for quite a number of years. We were happily surprised at the improvements that have been made and expect that other parts of the hotel will continue in the same direction.

The price, at 89 Euros for a modern twin bed room facing the sea, was very competitive and everything about the room was first class.

The lobby has a lot of charm but still needs a lot of updating, as does the brasserie attached to the hotel. But as we didn't use that part of the hotel, I haven't considered it in my rating (you might want to deduct a star for that if you think it's important.) The breakfast room, while remaining what some might call "dated," was nonetheless a charming room and seemed in very good condition. I wouldn't want them to change it. The buffet breakfast itself was quite good, with a reasonable selection of choices.

Finally, and it can't be stressed enough, everyone in the hotel were delighfully kind and helpful. We hope to be going back soon.

Room Tip: Take a room in the section of the hotel that has been modernized.

Hotel very old but very pleasant. We paid extra for a sea view but wish we hadn't as the room was very small although very clean. We had the hotel arrange a garage for us which was worth every penny as the hotel is inside the walls and although parking was alongside the hotel it was not easy to find!

Room Tip: ask for a view of the square - very nice and cheaper

We stayed one night here en route for the ferry back to the UK, so we chose it for its location. Without doubt it's a brilliant location in the town but that isn't always the best choice. It is a beautiful old building with lots of character but our seaview bedroom was jaded; the decor and furniture really needs updating. But having said that, the room was fine, the bed comfortable and the shower room (obviously fairly recently renovated) was small but luxurious.
We arrived late afternoon and wanted cup of tea and a beer but the cafe/bar was packed, although we found a table and waited, and waited. There were just two waiters on duty and they simply couldn't cope on the sunny afternoon in September. We waited a bit more but gave up in the end.
Breakfast was good but at twelve euros, you can get better value for money next door, or probably anywhere else in St Malo. The staff were efficient and friendly but after our non existent drink in the afternoon, we avoided the restaurant and ate dinner elsewhere.
I think people are seduced by the very pretty exterior and its central location, but I'm not sure it offers the best value for money in St Malo.

Room Tip: The seaview rooms are older but have amazing views of both the sea and ramparts and are away from th...

My Parents who are elderly went on a great 5 day trip with Barnes Coaches from the UK to France Brittany. The final destination was Hôtel France et Chateaubriand in St Malo (in the old city). On arrival the evening Meal and service was a disaster and the service was on the verge of Bulling. The group was not allowed to sit in the restaurant area and were steered to the back of the building to have their meal on trestle tables in a room. Some who had sit on the earlier tables (no direction from staff wrong location) were shouted at to move in to the room, had to swap glasses used for new glasses on the table etc. The abuse went on and comments on bulling were mentioned. Wrong food served to persons one older gentleman who was vegetarian was serve meat and felt intimidated to complain etc. Most were in 60s 70s or 80s and some had physical difficulties in mobility etc. They were extremely upset at the treatment, and felt the hotel just did not want them there? My parents asked me to send this message on the web sites to warn groups and other individuals about the potential treatment, The morning staff at breakfast were 100% better - well done them. Barnes Coach staff and driver were great and received the feedback about the hotel - Barnes Coach company conducted themselves very well.

Room Tip: Avoid this hotel = due to service to groups.

We have been staying here as our hotel of choice since 1998, as an en route hotel to Disney or Paris. This year we had a "staycation" horrid term, but good to describe a break near to home!!

As usual we had room 354, a lovely large room with three windows, two of which look out onto the ramparts and the sea.

The air con is very good, and with the windows closed, we heard no noise from outside. If you dont want to hear the bustle of the busy square, then dont accept a room overlooking it, it will be noisy.

One complaint and that is very a poor internet connection. The best signal we got was from the toilet..... The slowness was definatey frustrating, but this is not the hotels fault.

The housekeeping staff are very thorough and obliging, and a useful addition to our room was a small fridge,

I would recommend the breakfast. At 12 euros per adult, (son aged 14 not charged), it is very good value, yes, you can get cheaper, but I think the choice and quality was excellent,

Fresh croissants, baguettes, pain au chocolat, crepes, selection of jams, honey, fresh fruit, prunes, fruit salad, Madelaines, fruit cake, yoghurts, toast, eggs, ham, salami, cheese, proper freshly squeezed orange juice, coffee, hot chocolate, teas, I am not sure what else one would want for breakfast in France?

We stayed for four nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We paid 790 euros, which we found very good value. Athough we didnt take our car this time, would recommend booking a car parking space in the underground secure car part the Cite hotel the Chateaubriands sister hotel.

We stayed for a long weekend, having been to various hotels in St Malo over the years. This one is full of character and furnished tastefully with period pieces in the older half. There's a more modernised continental part but we weren't staying there. Our room was excellent, overlooking the square. Others have superb sea views. The restaurant serves good value meals either inside or on the terrace. People watching is perfect from here. The beach is about 100m away and access to the ramparts is round the corner. It's a perfect location. Staff were friendly and helpful - apart from one waiter who has been there a long time and never seems much enamoured of foreigners - but even that adds to the Gallic atmosphere!
