The Mercure is a good budget hotel (not most peoples idea of 4star I wouldn't think) in an excellent location. Overlooking the beach just a short drive from the ferry terminal and 10mins walk along the sea front to the lovely old town. The hotel looks like it has been recently refurbished, and whilst the decor and furniture is all a bit low budget Ikea, it's all nice and new and smart. The restaurant overlooks the beach and serves a decent breakfast. This area incorporates a small bar which wasn't used by anyone during our brief stay. Our bedroom was clean and compact but adequate as was the bathroom. The big issue for us was sleeping comfort. The room was not over heated, but the bed was hot and uncomfortable at night. Half way through the second night we discovered the matress had a plastic protector covering it. This is the kind of dreadful thing you might use to protect a mattress from incontinent occupants. For comfort a mattress needs to breathe, with a plastic cover it cannot do this so you are pretty much guaranteed a sweaty night unless you take it off as we did. The reception staff said it was to protect the mattresses from staining, and that these plastic sheets are thrown away after each bed change (not re-cycled). Mercure hotels are part of the Accor hotel group (including Novotel, Sofitel, Ibis and others) which boasts a sustainable green policy. This, along with single use plastic cups and paper cups for hot drinks in bedrooms seems to make a nonsense of their 'Planet 21' programme. So, I don't know how many Accor hotels use these nasty plastic mattress covers, but you would be well advised to strip the bed and remove any of these to avoid a sweaty night.

Dear guest,

Thank you for your very interesting and relevant comments. It will help us to improve the quality of the products used in our Bedroom and restaurant.
Especially on the use of plastic that should be banned in our hotels during the year, it is an ongoing project of the Accor group for 2019 through Planet 21 Program.
To maintain irreproachable hygiene, disposable materials are used, but our efforts go towards using natural materials such as paper or other natural recyclable materials. We will therefore carefully consider your suggestions to improve the client’s well-being and respect for the environment.

Best regards,

A good friendly hotel located about 10-12 mins walk to the old town.
There is no hotel parking but quite a lot of on street parking - about £3 per day.
Unfortunately somebody though it would be a good idea to have a sailing festival and place the hospitality tents on the main public car parks causing a parking place shortage all over St Malo. We managed to get a space but in the summer it could be trickier i think, though OK in the evenings probably.
Even the big car park behind the hotel was closed - nothing on it - just closed - how typically French.
This did affect our plans and timings but not really the hotels fault.
The rooms were good but the bathroom was a little tired, all clean and tidy and well maintained.
Our room overlooked the sea which was great and I had 2 great morning runs on the beach straight out the front door of the hotel.
Good breakfast and a good selection of fresh pastries, topped up as needed. We did note the spotlights in breakfast area were quite dazling depending on where you sat but we managed to get a table with a beach view window one morning.
Lots of food places round about inc French, modern, posh fish etc - all within 5 mins walk of hotel.
overall would stay here again but check there was no sailing event on first.

This was probably the cleanest hotel that I have stayed in for many years. Was friendly, but professional. Street parking was no problem for a one night stay. Pleasant walk to old walled town, where there are plenty of restaurants. We ate at an Italian restaurant, close by, and had a very pleasant meal. Would thoroughly recommend this hotel. Very well equipped.

Room tip: Sea view desirable if one is available.

Easy to find sea front location. Parking on the road outside. We had a sea view double room. It was clean and as I would expect for a Mercure. There isn't a restaurant here but there are lots to choose from within walking distance. We stayed 2 nights in June when we were having a mixture of heat and storms. We certainly needed the air-conditioning. Breakfast was ok, the usual croissants etc. My husband returned home alone early morning on Brittany Ferries and I was waiting a couple of hours to catch a train to Paris. The weather was not good and it rained on and off. The staff very kindly offered to get me a taxi to the train station. Thankfully the rain eased so I could walk. Overall a pleasant stay.
