We had a long weekend in St Malo and this was the best place we found for a relaxed drink and snack with a steady and convivial stream of locals. The owner or batman was very friendly too. Recommended. Pity there are no photos but you can see some good ones on Qype and Flickr.

As good a laid back drinking place as we found in the old walled town.

Please treat this review with care. I am not sure whether, when I asked for this bar to be listed, I intended that it might be an attraction rather than an eating place. I cannot say wether the food here amounts to much more than light snacks to accompany drinking? There was certainly some kind of little cooking arrangement behind the counter and there were baskets of cut bread and a couple of plates of soft cheese on the bar itself. I have scared it a five because it was convivial, amusing, bustling, French (I am too English to discern whether I should say Breton), predominantly but not wholly male, generous, inclusive and welcoming. It was early days Beaujolais Nouveau in November and that wine was being freely drunk. The bar is near Grand Porte, on the inside of the road facing the inner side of the town wall. There were no evident tourists apart from myself. Everyone was happy, mostly working men young and older, a lot of banter, some half understandable to me but most not. The owner or barman fed the mood perfectly, glasses being seamlessly refilled, a steady stream of what seemed to be a mixture of modernish regional music and other French but mainstream stuff. Two or three pairs of ladies in their prime came and slotted into seats at the indoor tables some on a higher level. All good natured, seemingly a good deal cheaper than the tourist haunts. I spent an hour or more soaking it up, occasionally drawn into conversation, variously teased, bated and possibly cross-examined but always treated hospitably. A thoroughly refreshing and enjoyable time and I snacked and drank throughout. I can't promise the same experience to other idle traveller/trippers who come after me, but in the spirit of Tripadvisor candour I offer the flavour of my wasted time as an incentive to others.
