Have dined here every now and then, but on 12 November 2012 we were very pleasantly surprised.....maybe the loss of the coveted Michelin star has proved to be the removal of the Sword of Damocles from hanging over their head.
This time the food was totally correct and classic (we ate Foie Gras, Clams served in the classic Snails style with butter, garlic and parsley, sole (expertly fileted at the table), and veal kidneys. The service was good and friendly. The wine was also reasonably priced (and they were open on a Monday !)

Thirty years apart, La Duchesse Anne still provides a feeling that old style France charm will retain Gloria Mundi for ever, as the last time we ate there prior to this September was September 1982. The difference was paid in Euro rather than Francs, not in quality nor dining experience.

Always expensive, always good and an experience but for us the edge has gone off. We love Saint-Malo and we did love La Duchese Anne but it dropped off its pedestal when we visited in September. The food is still good but we don't like leaving a restaurant with that feeling that we've overpaid for what we've had.

We finished off four days in St Malo with a trip to the Duchesse Anne and it was well worthwhile. But first let's dispell one myth that is repeated serveral times in the Trip Advisor reviews of this restaurant, namely that it possesses two Michelin Stars. It does not, and probably never has. The 2012 list of restaurants in France with Michelin stars does not include this restaurant. It was fairly clear from looking at the menu that it was not a Michelin starred establishment. There is also no such claim or signage at the restaurant, and the reviews on here that refer to hearty food tended to bear that out. Thank heaven it is not. This is a straightforward old fashioned French restaurant - no fussy nouvelle style food here - we were delighted with our food, with the service and with the ambiance. Yes, it is pricey, especially if you have lobster, but it is worth it if you want a special meal. Better to dine inside than the enclosed terrace. Highly recommended (especially as it is NOT Michelin starred).

I organised a big table for a work lunch do in July and was first a bit apprehensive as I knew it changed hand late last year. Jessica was very helpful with the menu and the whole organisation. The whole congregation had a fantastic lunch and couldn't fault the food at all. I would recommend the Sole Meuniere or the Filet of St Pierre. The staff is very attentive yet not too overbearing (like they can be at Claridge few years back). The Tarte Tatin was also a winner together with an interesting plateau de fromage!
