Small museum with almost no paintings with any "wow" factor (this is of course subjective). Opening times 10-12 noon and 2pm-4pm. I guess having a nice lunch break is more important than providing a good service to people wanting to look at the gallery.

“Highlight of this visit to Rennes”
Reviewed June 18, 2012

A significant major regional collection with remarkably full representation across the gamut of Western Art. Many beautiful pictures spaciously displayed in the first floor gallery. Based on an 18c private collection supplemented by many judicious (and on-going) acquisitions. Hard to believe that the charm and humanity of Maarten van Heemskerch's St Luke is nearly 500 years old. We stayed too long and I couldn't find a printed catalogue but this is said to be online (I couldn't open that either). The presence of many well-behaved attentive young school classes engaging with their teachers in their local museum was charming. Many memorable images and we will be back.

“Musee des Beaux-Arts Rennes”
Reviewed June 6, 2012

It was a hot day outside but nice and cool inside. The ground floor shows various exhibits from the Egyptians, Romans and Greeks - a little of everything from a sarcophagus, to vases, coins and so on. There is an inner courtyard with a glass ceiling which lets in lots of light and around this courtyard are some beautiful marble statues of various subjects both classical and modern.
Off this courtyard is a small room that is a man's personal collection of cuiosities. These tall glass cabinets contain all sort of oddities from Japanese artefacts to things from Africa. One could spend a long time browsing these. However, our time was limited and we wanted to see the art works. Therefore we went up in the lift to the upper floor. The paintings here were arranged in chronological order - some famous some not so well known. One could take pictures but not with flash. Whilst there, a school party of small children came in - extremely well-behaved and sat down in front of a very large picture to have a lecture. Wardens wandered around but were not obtrusive. We would have liked to spend longer in this museum but out time was limited. There was seating to rest our weary limbs as this was one of many museums on our trip and a day was not really enough to really appreciate Rennes.
