“Our second visit and just as good”
Reviewed December 20, 2012

We visited for one night in August and discovered the hotel by luck, This time we booked three nights and loved it just as much. We were in rooms on the garden side and the nights were so peaceful, quiet and comfortable, it was difficult to stir ourselves. As we hoped, the fire was lit downstairs (though crackling rather than roaring) and the Christmas decorations made it even more charming, Breakfast is excellent with fruit, yoghurts and a wide choice of pastries and bread. The rooms are not luxurious but everything important is just right - the beds are large and comfortable, the bed linen is good quality and our bathroom was large and warm - although the shower took a while to get going. Everything is spotless and it all feels cared for.Stephanie and Laurent made us feel very welcome and I have a feeling we will return on a regular basis (as long as Brittany ferries don't put up the prices!) Dinan looked gorgeous and if the mayor has his way and there is a market next year, it will be fantastic.

Room Tip: I would recommend any room

Our host told us that this property is a unification of five houses, some dating to the 17th century. The walls of our room seemed to be three feet thick: a very quiet room. The property is just outside one gate of the walls of the city which makes it so easy to explore Dinan. Helpful advice from the owners about where to eat was very accurate. A bit tough to find but well worth the effort.

The new owners went out of their way in every respect to make our two night stay one of the best during our 18 day tavelling in Normandy and Brittany. The rooms were comfortable and the location while a little difficult to find was excellent. Some very good dining opportunities await yiou in Dinan and it does not have the crods of St Malo.

Charming, inexpensive hotel within easy walking distance of Dinan's many medieval attractions and best restaurants. The young couple who own the place are friendly and helpful. We arrived on a rainy Saturday afternoon and found the perfect touch -- logs blazing in the lounge fireplace. We had two rooms on the second floor, both of which were spotlessly clean with nice showers and very comfortable beds. We spent two days at the Hotel de la Porte de la Saine-Malo and were reluctant to leave. It was one of the high points of a two-week visit to Normandy and Brittany.

I can only echo the previous positive comments that have made this hotel #1 on T/A. The only negative is the driving directions which is not the hotels fault: when you cross the viaduct you cannot see the sign that says "St. Malo" unless the other passenger is watching for it; the sign is not turned toward the drivers side. I only mention this as a possible aid to future drivers to the hotel. I also found the staff very nice and helpful. B.T.W., I stayed here on Thursday, there is a nice market in the town center on that day.

Although this is a bed & breakfast Hotel it is exceptional for value Cleanliness & a good welcome from the owners who are only too pleased to answer any questions you have .Having stayed at this Hotel previously [under different ownership] their standards are high , breakfast is typically "French" plenty of choice -rolls , mini Brioche, toast, Croissants home made jams etc. It.s location is excellent with plenty of on street parking with a short walk into Dinan with all it's excellent restaurants . An ideal location for visiting all sights in this area [St Malo, Dinard , all the sea food ports & beaches. Our room was one of three on the ground floor [No.5] excellant for thhose with some mobility issues with a nice walk in shower [ a step over of 5"] Enjoy Dinan & your stay in this Hotel !"!!

Room Tip: No.5 looking ground floor looking onto garden walk in shower BIG bed [3 ft twins together] Quiet ,

We had the unfortunate experience of having our car breakdown just outside Dinan and were in a bit of a state when we arrived at the hotel. However the owner greeted us and immediately assisted us, helping us to cancel reservations for following nights and establishing when the garage could fix our car (it took 3 days as it was over a weekend). I cannot stress how helpful this was as our French is embarrassingly bad! The service was far in excess of what I would expect from any hotel, we really felt so lucky that we had booked the Porte Saint-Malo as it certainly seems that the owners really care about their guests. They made a very upsetting experience so much easier. Thank you!
