“A great stay in Dinan, in a wonderful historical home”

We had a brief stay of just 2 nights, but thoroughly enjoyed our time in Dinan. Really nice, medieval town with many nice shops & restaurants. The home is very comfortable, clean, and has so much character & history. Also the home is in a great location right in the heart of town -- no need to drive anywhere, just walk to the many shops & restaurants.

“Right on the money”
Reviewed June 6, 2016 for a stay in June 2016

We arrived during a celebration in the town with a cycle race. All the roads were closed and we were sent around the town a couple of times until we called Sean (The manager). He walked down to where we were and jumped in our car to guide us in. What a lovely guy, very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We took advantage of the car parking and never really saw the car again until we left. Dinan is a beautiful town and just knocks your eyes out at every turn. We were unfortunate to have illness strike my Father in Law down at the moment we arrived which put the brakes on our holiday as he was bedridden for the first couple of days. This was unfortunate as we had never been to Brittany before and were set for a good bit of exploring. We stuck to the locality and what a great place we were in. The house is very local to everything and the car just wasn't needed at all. The house itself is very quirky with a kitchen/diner/seating area on the ground floor. The stairs are a little tricky for those of a less than spritely disposition. The first floor has two bedrooms (1 Dbl and a twin) and the top floor has a lounge area with TV and a sort of sleigh bed for extra stayers I presume. As stated the stairs are not frail friendly but are ok if you're good for some climbing. Position wise it's brilliant. You'll have people taking photo's of the house all the time as it really is very charming to look at. We loved our time here and found the town and it's people truly wonderful. I wholeheartedly recommend the place.

“Charming Historical Home in a Perfect Location”
Reviewed May 19, 2016 for a stay in May 2016

From the very first contact, our experience renting La Vielle Auberge was wonderful. Communication was prompt. Both the owners and the local manager were extremely responsive and helpful. It was a pleasure from contract to return of deposit.
The property itself is totally charming. It has been tastefully restored, neglecting neither the old world ambience or modern creature comforts. The home dates from the 14 C and is on 3 levels - each one more quaint than the next. (One caveat - original doorways are low and the stairs are narrow and turning. This could cause difficulties for elderly visitors or very young children. For the rest of us, it is like stepping back in time.)
My husband and I have been traveling to France yearly for 20 years, and we have rented many houses throughout the country. No home was as well equipped as this. Practically every need was anticipated. We stayed for a week and wished we could have stayed longer.
We highly recommend this property.

“A unique medieval jewel in Dinan”
Reviewed May 18, 2016 for a stay in May 2016

From all of the previous reviews we had great expectations of this house and it did not let us down. In a superb spot with everything in the vibrant town of Dinan close by but just off the centre (say less than 150m) it is away from the hustle and bustle in the perfect position.

The house was spotlessly clean with good facilities and an excellent local unobtrusive back up if required. The retained character of the property built in 1386 is immense but with that comes a fully equipped house that caters for your every modern need whilst retaining the charm and history. And what a history as one of the oldest properties in Dinan.

We had plans to travel across Brittany throughout the week using Dinan as an evening base. We were so enchanted by this ancient charming town and what it had to offer as well as being comfortably in place in La Vielle Auberge, we ended up spending the week here receiving a big welcome from the locals.

The numerous restaurants were some of the best I have frequented with some incredible food on offer and due to our location only a short stroll away through ancient streets.

I would highly recommend this house to anyone searching out a taste of cosmopolitan French life, cuisine and history. Dinan has a lot to offer and this house with its old worlde charm is the perfect base to enjoy it from.

Regarding the big question, would I return? The answer to that is without hesitation.

Thank you for a wonderful review Andy. Many of our guests who have not been to Dinan come with expectations of using the house as a base but end up spending their time in Dinan itself. There is so much to see and do and with a wide selection of restaurants and shops why travel further afield. We hope you come back to visit with us again in the near future.

“Experience of a life-time”

Imagine living in the 14th, 15th 16th, 17th or 18th century, but with modern conveniences like electricity, indoor plumbing, television, radio, and fully equipped kitchen. Staying at La Vielle Auberge created that once in a life-time experience. A beautiful renovation of an old timber house in a town that still looks like it did centuries ago. Dinan is a wonderful city to explore. I can only say that it's your loss if you do not experience this amazing home.

Thank you for such wonderful comments! It gives us enormous pleasure when guests enjoy the house and have the same feelings about it as we do. I feel that Cindy and I don't actually own the house but are simply caretakers preserving her for others to enjoy now and in the future. I wish more people could experience the wonders of our house as it truly is from a bygone age. Thank you once again for your kind words and spending your holidays In Dinan.

“Great place to stay”
Reviewed August 25, 2015 for a stay in August 2015

This is a fantastic old house with low ceilings and stone walls that give you the impression you have stepped back in time, such a difference from the plastic hotels that we have stayed in before. The house offers everything we needed as a family, from a well equipped kitchen to WiFi for the kids, but still retains the charm in keeping of a house of its age. The large Kitchen / Dining area is downstairs with delightful bedrooms up a narrow staircase on the first floor. The attic is bright open space with UK and French Satellite TV and big comfy sofas to relax in to. We were greeted on arrival by Sean who gave us a tour around the house and gave us lots of useful information to help us settle in. Car parking is in an underground car park just a short walk from the house, but as you are situated in the centre of the town, you don't need to drive. It is almost impossible to go hungry or thirsty in Dinan with bars, restaurants and crêpes throughout the town, all within a short walk.

The only thing that I would point out be that the house is a very old building with traditionally low doorways and narrow stairs, so you need to be a little careful as you move around. Also, the town is built with cobbled roads and paths, so buggies, pushchairs and wheelchairs will have a bumpy ride.

This is a lovely place to stay and I would certainly recommend it and I look forwards to returning to explore further...
