“Super stay.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 26, 2010

This hotel is a little outside the town on the edge of an ancient tumulus. Views are absolutely stunning. The room was very comfortable, well presented and immaculate. Our room was very quiet. Free wiFi access with the highest speeds I've experienced in a hotel.
We ate in the restaurant and the food and service were very good. Gourmet style so interesting extras such as the amusee bouche. Carefully chosen wines were reasonbly priced. Cheese board was extensive and the waitress very knowledgeable about each one.
Downside was the breakfast at 16 euros which was over double the price of anywhere else. The normal rate for a stay is high so it is only worth staying if you get a discounted rate from one of the booking sites.

Rooms were roomy, modern and clean. Staff were courteus and the rate was good. We stayed 3 nights and enjoyed it. Pool was heated and nice garden. Recommended.

The Hotel Tumulus has great potential. The location is stunning, the rooms are large and comfortable and the dining room is very attractive. The problem is the management. Welcome was cool and relatively unhelpful. She seemed bored and burned out. The breakfast was expensive and limited. The Carnac area is fascinating . We could have easily spent another day in the area. Hotel is also a Spa yet no bathrobes were available in the rooms. The massage services were only average.

We were traveling from the Lot area to Carnac in one day with no accomodation booked. My partner recalled an upmarket hotel in Carnac that she wanted to go to and so we rang the Tumulus. They were looking for €150 per night for 5 nights and we haggled down to €100 per night room only. When we arrived (in shorts) after an all day drive we immeadiatley got the impression the hotel were not happy about having agreed to the rate, a very cold reception. We were shown to our room which while clean and spacious the beige carpet was very stained.
Next day while trying to access the gate around the pool we were offered no assistance from the manager and staff who semed to take pleasure in watching us from the dinning room wandering around trying 3 different gates to open (as mentioned by a previous contributor), eventually we trapsed up to the dinning room to seek assistance, this was developing into a dissaster.
The dinning room was stunning but so were the prices and unfortuantley apart from the raw oysters the rest of the meal was poor with service cahotic, my main arrived 15mins before my partner's meal.

This place has real potential, great building, great location and the best dinning room ever and fantastic pool when you get into it. The manergess needs to relax and welcome people and her staff will follow by example.

We (my wife, 14 year old daughter and I) have just returned from a two week trip that included a three night stay at the Tumulus. Upon our arrival, at 4:30 PM after a long drive from the Loire Valley, we were told that our room was not yet ready. We cooled our heels in the nicely appointed bar which has an aspect of the St. Michel Chapel, atop the tumulus (grave mound) but where getting service was more than a chore. At one point my wife joked that the same person seemed to be performing all of the staff chores at the place. We waited nearly an hour for the room to be finished. As it turned out, the room was in a "villa" that adjoined the hotel property, so we had to trudge our bags to the villa (no staff help thank you) over a gravel path that allowed no "wheeling". I'm no luggage weenie, but this was a pain in the butt after a long drive - and had to be repeated in reverse upon check-out. Our room was on the second floor and overlooked the front yard, then what appeared to be an industrial complex. I opined that we were vanquished to the "villa" because we had a "child", since the other couple staying there had young kids as well. It became very clear to us during our stay that there was the "inn" and there were the "villa people", pun intended. Nevertheless, the phone in our room did not work (we were advised that this had been the case for several days due to a lightning strike) the internet access was at the "big house" as was every other amenity. To reach the toilet in our space we had to go through our daughter's room, invading her privacy and stepping over her pull out bed - a very poor layout to be sure. The room housekeeping schedule remained the same, so that each day, at the time we normally would be trying to relax and change for dinner, we had to stay away while the room was straightened.

The pool, while nice, was within a fenced/locked area that everyone seemed to have trouble with until they discovered that to open the gate you had to push (bend) the fence away from the catch. The one day that I tried to use the hot-tub it was closed "because the man did not come".

The dinner staff was more than polite and solicitous, and the food well prepared and nicely presented. Our dessert course however, came one dish at a time after lengthy delay. The glace that my daughter ordered came last, and very late with the embarassed explanation "because it had sat and melted so we had to make more". Huh? That aside, the dining room was one of the most beautiful we have experienced.

Considering the price of a stay at the Tumulus, which was more than $360 per night, I certainly cannot consider it a good value compared to the kind of room and service that one receives at other similarly priced inns in France.

We stayed here two nights and enjoyed the experience. The dinners in the restaurant were excellent (especially the oysters) and the breakfasts much more generous than the norm. The manager was friendly and offered good wine recommendations.
Be sure to print maps of hotel location-although a small town, Carnac has confusing streets and the hotel was difficult for us to find, even though it is right next to St. Michel's Tumulus.

We spent one week in July 2007 in this hotel where we had a nice quiet stay. It ranks 3 stars and it is worth it.

We had taken a Junior Suite with direct access to the garden. The bedroom is quite spacious with a nice bathroom. Although it might not be important to some people, but you get a flat screen and broadband internet in the room. The restaurant offers a nice cuisine and we recommend the following restaurants nearby:
- L'azimut in La Trinité, gastro type, quite good.
- Le chantier in La Trinité too, excellent value for money.

The must do in the area are:
- Ile aux moines;
- Belle ile;
- Quiberon;
- Carnac.
