Very nice three star hotel in Carnac, up on the hill nearby the .. Tumulus. The rooms are nice and clean, albeit a bit pricey. But then everything is expensive in this area. Very good breakfast (we did not have dinner there). The service is very friendly and helpful to find locations or book nice restaurants.
We stayed in the Villa Josephine outside of the hotel compound in the family room, which has somewhat of a ghostly quality. The weirdest being that we had to drive over the lawn to the building to park our car. In the evening and morning you can see the rabbits running around there, very funny. Anyway, good experience, we might go back there.

Stayed here two nights in late July. Hotel staff was universally friendly, kind and helpful. Our room was fine--not big, but not small, with a spacious bathroom with walk-in shower. The bed was firm; the bedding perfectly fine.

Breakfast was excellent in the beautiful dining room-- a buffet with great, fresh bread, good cheese, cereals. fruits and pastries.

As it turned out, we were upgraded to this hotel by the hotel originally booked. For our group of four American ladies, it was a special treat. Rated a Relais de Silence, it was incredibly nice and very quiet, off season, without the spa crowd. i was more than pleased when I opened my window directly onto the Tumulus St. Michel. We opted out on dining there as the prices were high. The bathrooms were to be the best we'd experience in our two weeks of traveling around France. It seemed to be light on staff to go and no one spoke English. Also on the downside, a new phenomenon this trip, no working phones, although they did have wi-fi and provided a cord for a laptop.

Room Tip: Loved my room on the tumulus side. The young man actually showed us our rooms before checking in, so look out the window.

Difficult to reconcile other reviews with our experience. Room was small but OK. Dinner service, with only half a dozen tables occupied and three waiting staff, was unbelievably slow (two and a half hours for four courses). First course was good, the second was utterly bizarre - a "what have we got left in the fridge?" amalgum of ill suited companions. The dessert was equally odd, but after waiting so long we had given up caring. Our disstisfaction was met with polite astonishment that we had failed to appreciate the experierience: the fault was clearly ours. Having spent a decade on the board of a Michelin starred restaurant, I beg to differ. We skipped breakfast.

Room Tip: The sea view is distant

Le Tumulus is in a lovely location - at the foot of a 7000 year old megalithic monument - and everything in the hotel is functioning and lovely. But we found the hotel often to be a bit "too French". For example, we arrived on Sunday at 8.20pm and we had to phone a special phone number, so someone could come and reopen reception for us, and show us to our rooms.
We had junior suites, which are just outside of the main building, and found they did not come with wifi (only in main building).
Breakfast was 16 Euros - expensive for France - and it was largely a basic continental breakfast. On day 2, they even ran out of croissants and pain au chocolat, and there were hardly any guests!
Let's hope that during the peak season, these issues are sorted out. I would definitely stay again, but I felt with little effort, this could have become a great experience, especially because the rooms and buildings are so nice and new!
