Like Lisada75, I too was a little let down when I realized that the menhirs are fenced off. They say that it's to preserve the stones, but I would think most of the damage comes from weather erosion. It's only speculation, but I really think it's just a money grab so that people will pay for a tour (which is the only way to go inside the fence). They only offer tours at certain times of day, so make sure before you go that you can actually get one! Otherwise, not really worth the visit.

The menhirs are amazing but all fenced off! That I understand, but it would have been more meaningful to be able to walk amongst this history and to feel it...

We chose out of three private companies to take the mini train white with sparklies (7euros adult 5 euros for 3 yr old) - little one was ecstatic and chose this instead of the open top bus and horse ride. The trian narrative was in both french and english (so those not so fluent in french could understand the detailed information) After our trip of 50 mins around carnac we got to see the beach the dockyards and the majority of the 'megalithiques'. We could then pick out the GIANT stone and quickly made a story up about the witch changing the giant into stone so that the llittle one was entranced down the rather long ish forrest path to the stone. We took a look at the tomb as well and were pleasantly surprised to find a laminated sheet in english as well as some other languages for us to borrow for a donation of 1 euro. We took a picnic onto the beach by churchill point and found the local tourist information to be helpful in finding us petrol and a disposable camera (as we had left our camera back at the caravan site!) A lovely day a MUST see! Very interesting! Only grievance we had was that if it had not been for the private tour companies there would have been no guide as the main shop was shut!

Very, very interesting collection of linked sites, easily viewable by walking round the outsides and looking over the walls. We paid for the 'guided tour' which allows you to go inside, but it was really a mostly stationery lecture lasting for one hour and fifteen minutes. You will need at least A level French to understand it and it would be more suitable to do this in the visitor centre, although to be fair, the guide spoke very clearly and audibly. However, apart from actually standing amongst the stones, you see less on the tour than you would if you walked round by yourself and you don't learn anything that the educated person doesn't already know.

What could one say about Carnac and its thousands of megalithic sites, I strongly recommend to search for the best preserved tumulus and Dolmens, incredible experiences. The Menhirs are daunting for its numbers, different sizes, incredible.
