Back in August we were privelaged to have been part of a small group tour, led by Afootinfrance, that took us around Brittany, and in particular, took us to see Carnac and St Just stone alignments. For me it was a real 'wow' moment. To be able to walk up to the stones and touch them was very special.

Carnac's stones inspire awe and wonder. Spread over 3 main sites of over 100 acres, about 3000 menhirs (upright stones) are lined up in row after row. This 6,500 year old Megalithic site is linked to key sacred events in the Neolithic period, but details remain a mystery.
The Visitor Centre is located at the first site, Menec, and you can either take the tourist train for 7 euros which gives you a good overview of the three sites or take a guided personal tour at the Menec site. Or you can simply walk around the Menec site which is fenced off, but some of the largest menhirs are outside the fence so you have a chance to clamp yourself to one and get a Megalithic surge of pagan power.

We were completely humbled and bewildered by this ancestral monument form 4,000 BC!
The second set of menhirs after the main building and museum can be walked through and is open to the public with a great rest area surrounded by pine trees.
The ground is lined with heather and other wild flowers all around the rocks which seem to go on forever up and down a valley.
I would highly recommend taking this walk, the wind seems to sing some melody while you walk.

00s of prehistoric menhirs lined up in straight lines and the odd tomb thrown in!
it is just large stones in lines but somehow it feels much more than that. Why did they build this, it's not as if it ,? ,served a prupose like Stonehenge or Avebury as it covers such a vast area.
If you are in the area it is a "must". It is free and outside of the busy season you can walk amongst the stones.
The cafe/shop in the middle of the site lost Euro 95 worth of business because the woman refused to open the toilet!

the standing stones of carnac are magical - beyond expectation. the weather cooperated, adding a bit of rain and drama to our long walks through the stones. the giant in the woods was worth the long hike through the woods, and the tumulus near it was a showstopper.
