“Lovely Suprise”
Reviewed August 12, 2012

Little difficult finding hotel. When we went to reception was little disappointed seemed in need of updating but what a suprise when we went to the room. Obvioulsy had been newly refurbished everything was spotlessly clean and the air conditioning was very welcome. Breakfast was expensive.

rooms just refubrished. They are modern and comfortable. Appreciated the presence in the room of a lot of electrical points to connect devices. Common areas poorly decorated. Room corridor still do be completed with a nasty smell of painting. Wrong attitude at the concierge. They were unavailable to reserve us a restaurant although there was no queue at the desk. We were two guests but towels available for just one.

Stayed in the Oceania whilst attending bthe Clermont v Ulster Heineken Cup game January 2012. Hotel handy for the stadium. Well priced and functional rooms which have recently been renovated. Excellent breafast. Some renovation work ongoing.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the newly renovated rooms.

All hotels need renovating every so often, so the choice to the owners is either to do it all in one go and close for the period, or do it floor by floor and keep open for custom. If this is the case, I think the first rule should be to advise customers at the time of booking (across all booking engines) that renovations are in progress. Then, we wouldn't have been slightly overpowered by the smell of paint as we walked through the fifth floor to our room. And why do hotel designers feel that the bathroom and the bedroom must be open plan? Out of some misplaced belief that people in bed have to talk to their partner who's cleaning their teeth? I'm all for big bathrooms, but not if it results in a much smaller bedroom, which is does in this case. And why put in a cupboard under the luggage rack which could contain a minibar, but doesn't? Or build a shelf for tea and coffee facilities, but not put them in? Or make a decision to close the restaurant and bar at the weekends? The staff were variable: the woman at breakfast insisted on all ten of us sitting right next door to each other, as if, in an earlier life, she'd worked for Clermont Ferrand Institute for Young Offenders and wanted to keep an eye on us all. Here's a tip: breakfast isn't worth the €17 they charge: go to the bar over the road and get a proper French breakfast. Unless you like sausages and bacon sitting in oil accompanied by some rather crusty scrambled egg. The night porter, however was hilarious and really eager to please. We only paid €89 for the room. And, for that price, it was fine and exactly what we needed for a stopover. But it was early January and I'm sure in the middle of the year, you'd pay double that, so beware.
One other word of warning: we arrived in Clermont on a Saturday night and by the time we'd checked in and had gone out looking for restaurants, it was approaching ten o'clock. We were told to go to the Place de Jaude, which was five minutes' walk from the hotel. All the restaurants we went into not only said no, but looked at us as if we were mad, truly mad. "Monsieur, it is ten o'clock on a Saturday night and you want food? Zut, alors." We ended up in Macdonalds. How sad is that?

Arrived after a long drive through France to discover no tea/coffee facilities at all, bar closed and restaurant closed from Saturday lunchtime until Monday. Staff offered to make tea!! Not a good start. Upgraded rooms were OK, bit on the ' formica' side, bathrooms beautiful but inside the bedroom, and somewhere on the fourth floor something buzzes all the time, all night!!!!
Obviously ongoing renovations, but not exactly worthy of the stars

We stayed here with friends on Sat 27th/Sun28th August on our way home from the south of France. What no one told us was that the hotel is almost closed at weekends with no facilities being available apart from breakfast which had been included in the price. There were no tea/coffee facilities or mini bar available in the "renovated" rooms we had despite the fact that the bar was closed ALL DAY both Sat/Sun, the restaurant closed and no room service available. You needed to go out of the hotel to get a coffee or drink after a 6 hour drive which was really not acceptable in a city centre hotel. The renovated rooms were interesting - designed by someone with a sense of humour - e.g the open plan bathroom. Having booked and upgraded by e-mail, a simple e-mail advising us beforehand of the lack of facilities at the weekend would have been appreciated and perhaps made us reconsider our booking. Would not stay there again and would not recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: upgraded rooms are very modern but
