“The most beautiful small church”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 9, 2013

Located in the heart of Saint Jean de Luz, L'eglise Saint Jean Baptiste is a must see. Roman church and very simple from the outside, the inside will take your breath away. It has beautiful basque balconies on three sides, replicas of ships hanging from the top and beautiful gold statues . The is the church where in June 1660 King Louis the XIV also known as the sun king, got married to seal the treaty of the Pyrenees.

“A great example of Basque churches”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2013

I love this small church. It is really charming with his wooden work. Pay attention to the sentences in Basque in the laterals and to the ship hanged from the ceiling.
And of course, do not miss the door by which Louis 14th and Maria Teresa from Austria entered to get married.

Well worth a visit, there is no entrance fee, however its a working church so one needs to dress appropriately.

“Unusual wooden galleries over 3 tiers”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 30, 2012

This church was closed over lunch when we arrived by bike from Biarritz so we had a nice meander around the town until it opened. Well worth waiting for. The inside is a complete surprise given its humble exterior. I was most intrigued by the unusual wood galleries. We have seen many churches and cathedrals around Europe but this was a first. The galleries bring to mind the Globe Theater in London.
