Owner description: UNIQUE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE Visit a unique museum in France which is protecting a vast gallo-roman house vestiges, the Vésone Domus. Opened since 2003, in the heart of archaeological and plants park, Vesunna offers a 3000 m2 itinerary of permanent presentation of antique Perigueux. AN ARCHITECTURE BY JEAN NOUVEL Jean Nouvel the building project architect has completed a great number of works throughout the world. He is in particular the architect of the Quai Branly museum in Paris. A large umbrella, which is protecting the antic walls, floats above it. From the mezzanines, an impressive view opens onto the vestiges. Further on, the high glass walls reveal the landscaped gardens of the Vesone Tower and the IVth century rampart vestiges. The building is like a window onto the past which is buried under the modern city.

Museum (building)is extremely well designed and is a work of art enclosing a major archaeological ruin. The very inexpensive (1Euro) audioguide was actually priceless in viewing the site. We are rather unusual obsessive museum visitors-but we did two and a half hours.

The Museum is easy to find.Beyond the museum building there are a collection of easy to visit ruins. Over all, this museum is the prime visitor attraction in Perigeaux. (After the medieval quarter)

Staying in Sarlat, you are supposed to visit the pretty villages around, and maybe a side excursion to Les Eyzies or Lascaux, but if you are interested in Roman times, the easy drive to Périgueux (1 hour +/-) is really worthy. They have made a big museum over the foundations of a roman house. There is a massive roman tower outside the building ,and also consider a walk in the old city for the St Front Cathedral and, who knows, maybe a bit of shopping in the Limogeanne street.

A massive, modern, glass structure designed by Jean Nouvel built over the site of the preserved Roman remains of the Vesone Roman villa site. The museum is also home to many other finds from this period. A non French speaker may have difficulty understanding the information plaques alongside each exhibit as everything is in French only, but there is a very good and descriptive video showing the different stages of the evolution of the Roman villa itself which is self-explanatory even without the language. My husband's favourite artefact was a complete stone carved head of Bacchus found in nearby Montignac in late 19c. I loved the wonderfully bright painted wall decorations still in evidence in the rooms within the villa. The tower (shown in the mock-up model in the museum) can also be seen in the nearby grounds which, in the summer, is a good place for a picnic.

Located in a nice park setting with ruins outside including the Vesunna Tower you can walk about. The Museum itself is modern, well laid out and you can really get a picture of and appreciation for the Roman culture. Perfect 2 hour visit.

Well presented by aspects of life in the Roman time in Perigueux. Fascinating objects including real foot wear, grave sites, tools roof tiles. What a remarkable site.
