Review of Chateau de Pau

Chateau de Pau

Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Louis-Philippe, who held dear the celebration of French historical memorabilia, wanted Pau, so linked to the memory of Henri IV, to be part of this artistic programme, and a major contribution to his political credibility. Himself unable to visit the site, the king kept abreast of the work at his Bearnaise residence, while the Dukes of Orléans, Némours and Montpensier were entertained there with all due ceremony. The important purveyors to the Crown created an original suite of furniture in the then fashionable neo-gothic and neo-renaissance style for the chateau of Pau. These furnishings are an example of the authentic decoration of a royal abode under the July Monarchy. The tapestries on show at the château of Pau are, virtue of their number and quality, one of the most valuable collections in France.

“Nice tapestries!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 24, 2014

The most interesting building was the 12th century donjon. There were many later additions so there is a mix of architecture. The castle is famous as the birthplace of Henri IV (1553) and many rooms are filled with Goeblin tapestries. It is a nice place to spent and hour or so. Our English speaking guide was very nice and gave us a good tour.

The chateau is such a lovely place to visit & walk around. It is in wonderful condition. The architecture is beautiful & the views to the Pyrenees is stunning. Pau is a lovely town with some great restaurants. Their is an international airport in Pau which you can get flights from Stansted airport. Well worth a visit.

“History and art”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 27, 2014

The castle does not have very special arcitecture, but is full of very nice historic gobelins. It was a residence of the King Henry IV, even though he grew up in another chateau some miles away (you can still see it, but it's a private property and closed for visits).

In the castle of Pau you'l finde some authentic things and art objects from that time.

On the square in front of the castle you can get the touristic bus-"train" to see the nice town of Pau, where xou can also get somtheing to eat, or to take a break and spent some time in nice restaurants all around the center of the town.

The visit can be combined with the visiting of the sanctuary of Lourdes, which is only some miles away from Pau. Biarritz is also not so far away to become unreachable from there, vice versa.

The whole region of Gascogne, Navarra and Aquitagne is well known by its wines and armagnac, whic could be bought all around the towns and villages in small and bigger stores, where you can also get a professional advice on these.

“Don't miss it!”

Very nice, don't miss it. Go on the first Sunday of the month - it's free entry! It's a one hour guided tour in the castle.
