Owner description: Louis-Philippe, who held dear the celebration of French historical memorabilia, wanted Pau, so linked to the memory of Henri IV, to be part of this artistic programme, and a major contribution to his political credibility. Himself unable to visit the site, the king kept abreast of the work at his Bearnaise residence, while the Dukes of Orléans, Némours and Montpensier were entertained there with all due ceremony. The important purveyors to the Crown created an original suite of furniture in the then fashionable neo-gothic and neo-renaissance style for the chateau of Pau. These furnishings are an example of the authentic decoration of a royal abode under the July Monarchy. The tapestries on show at the château of Pau are, virtue of their number and quality, one of the most valuable collections in France.

“worth a visit”

The city of Pau, just north of the Pyrenees, is worth a visit, not just for its magnificent Chateau, dating from the time of HenryIV.

There is also the Boulevard des Pyrenees with beautiful views of the mountains on a clear day. the City has many restaurants with menus for all tastes, several squares boasting statues and fountains,
and wonderful shops.

“Don't miss the Chateau de Pau”
Reviewed November 9, 2012

They do guided tours which give you great information on Pau and especially Henri IV. I visited out of season and the tour I took was in French (not a problem for me), but I am sure they would do tours in English during the summer months and in any case there are booklets. I strongly recommend a guided tour to get the most out of a visit

It's a French Chateau, what's not to like! Guided tour, at a good pace not too fast. Lots of interesting information, Henry IIII was born there.

“Good tour”

Interesting one hour (compulsoury - you can't visit the interior by yourself) tour in rapid fire French only, but an English hand out sheet which covered evrything of interest.

“Henry's Castle”
Reviewed September 7, 2012

A really interesting castle, steeped in English as well as French history. It is in excellent condition, so can be done even when it is raining. It is right by the sea, so walks can be had along the paved areas by the shore, and it is also close to the shops. Pau itself, though, was a nightmare for driving and parking. Having got lost several times, we parked in one of the carparks near the edge and walked. Loads of signposts, but none going where we wanted!
