Owner description: Louis-Philippe, who held dear the celebration of French historical memorabilia, wanted Pau, so linked to the memory of Henri IV, to be part of this artistic programme, and a major contribution to his political credibility. Himself unable to visit the site, the king kept abreast of the work at his Bearnaise residence, while the Dukes of Orléans, Némours and Montpensier were entertained there with all due ceremony. The important purveyors to the Crown created an original suite of furniture in the then fashionable neo-gothic and neo-renaissance style for the chateau of Pau. These furnishings are an example of the authentic decoration of a royal abode under the July Monarchy. The tapestries on show at the château of Pau are, virtue of their number and quality, one of the most valuable collections in France.

Very pretty place, totally different to castles in Scotland. Great setting with all the pretty little eateries at the bottom in the square

We had a very good guide, who did his best to explain everything in French. As my French isn't that good I understood half of it, but enjoyed the visit very much. We didn't see the stunning views of the Pyrenees because of foggy weather, but the guide showed us pictures. A sunny day it must be faboulous.
The castle has the best collection of tapestry in France.

You need to wait for a tour which is given in French. Our guide spoke English so translated some to us. English leaflets useful. Teenager not charged for. They do love tapestries! Tipped guide at end. Worth walking into to the courtyard to get a feel for architecture even if you do not want to join a tour for inside. Easy to find. Walk up the main street. Pyrenees beyond. Lots of restaurants around there and would strongly recommend 'Pizzeria L'Etna.'. Steak and chips and Spaghetti Bolognese with drinks 30 euros. We walked the other way from our hotel and could find nowhere serving food at night!
