Description: The restaurant "Le Canard Royal" (The Royal Duck) offers original, sophisticated and gourmet dishes based on French South West products. Probably the best place in Pau to discover authentic regional products and unique recipes created by our talented chef. A daily menu is suggested from monday to friday with a gourmet and varied cuisine.

We ate here based on prior reviews and found that it lived up to the hype. If you love duck then you absolutely have to try this restaurant. We especially recommend the Magret Royal and the Caribbean foie gras, which was the best foie gras we've ever eaten. There are two things to be aware of, though. First, we had real problems finding the place - largely because its location on Google Maps is completely wrong. It is in an alley way near the Chateau de Pau (not in the street underneath the Chateau complex) - the restaurant on the corner is 'Dauphin' something or other, so when you see that, you know you're in the right place. Also, while both my husband and I have healthy appetites, we struggled to get through 2 courses (an entree and main). This is not because the courses are huge but because (I think) the food is very rich. Therefore, if you are eating with someone and want 3 courses, you might want to consider sharing an entree and dessert and getting 2 mains. This way, you'll feel full, but not like you need to be rolled home.

If you are in the mood for French duck cuisine then this place is a must! The character of the restaurant is great, minimal seating so environment stays quiet for the most part. Duck is the star of the menu and appetizers and main dishes primarily include duck. The wait staff was really great helping with the translation of the menu and also making recommendations. The desserts were amazing and overall the experience was A+. I would tell anybody visiting Pau to eat at this restaurant to experience food local to the Pau region.

Great friendly restaurant with some amazing food. Located in a small side street in the old part of the city near to the Château de Pau. Comfortable, rustic and not over crowded. All the duck dishes looked fantastic and the Magret Royal was delicious. Try the Café Gourmand for dessert, superb. Fine dining, good wines and excellent service.

Believe it or not, this place specialises in duck. So, you got to love duck. To be fair, there are a couple of shellfish dishes and desserts but duck is king.

The ardoise (slate) as a starter is an excellent introduc(K)tion with 4 different ways of serving duck. Mains include the duck several ways but we had the cassoulet and the confit of leg and shoulder.

Service was excellent and the chef/patron worked in Hinkley UK so has very good english even with a midlands accent!!

Fully recommended : you probably should book.

If you're looking for an authentic French meal within a picturesque ambiance, look no further. True to its name, it's a restaurant that specialises in duck dishes but the way the chef presents this provincial meat will blow your expectations out of the water.

My partner and I were spoilt for choice with the vast array of duck dishes on offer. Luckily for us, the staff were happy and eager to help and with their recommendations we went for the duck platter with no regrets. The servings were copious and introduced our palates to duck (foie gras, margret) in ways we didn't know were possible!

Our first visit was well worthy of an encore so for our second visit, we chose duck breast (margret) and again were not left disappointed. As with all the dishes, the mains are cooked with fresh produce and impeccably presented with edible exotic flowers for garniture.

For these reasons, it's clear why Le Canard Royal remains one of the best restaurants in Pau.
