Management Response
Jun 28, 2013
We are very pleased that you and your wife had a good holiday despite being here when this area was on maximum weather warnings, battered by the worst storms for many, many years with so many local towns & villages being devastated by floods. Happily, the house is on a hilltop.

As a chef, I love finding the best local produce for our guests and serving it in the private dining room, adjacent to the rental house, so thank you for your kind words about our food.

“How many wonderful things can we say about Les Vieux Chenes?”
Reviewed October 5, 2012 for a stay in September 2012

The graceful house sits at the top of a lovely rolling hill and is surrounded by pleasant gardens. Furnished with polished antiques, the gîte is fully and beautifully equipped, right down to hair dryers in the bathrooms. Close to many charming villages, the location is ideal for an exploration of rural life. and then there is the fabulous host Gillian! Upon arrival she had prepared a fantastic multi-course Béarnaise dinner, and throughout our stay was always available with information to ensure a great vacation. We have stayed in many gîtes over the years, but this one is one in a million! Lucky those who get to stay at Les Vieux Chenes.

We'll definitely be back.

“Great area made perfect by friendly owners living next door.”
Reviewed September 21, 2012 for a stay in September 2012

Four friends, two couples, stayed for a week at the end of the British summer, September. The weather was wonderful, and really ended the season off beautifully. The large clean pool was put to good use every day, and the view from the seating around it was fabulous. The old house took care of the weather, the hugely thick walls soaking up the heat and keeping the inside pleasantly cool. One day we went up into the Pyrenees seeing not just the magnificent mountains but also the Victorian Spas, modern Ski resorts and plenty of cyclists trying to emulate the Tour de France athletes, another was spent exploring the superb town of Pau, a couple of days we walked the local area, but I was also talked into just lazing by the pool by the less energetic.
A great area made even more enjoyable by the superb house and thoughtful and knowledgeable owners. Gillian also did a fabulous home cooked meal as an extra one night.

“Very comfortable and well appointed gite with good facilities”
Reviewed November 3, 2011 for a stay in October 2011

A very comfortable and well appointed gite with plenty of homely touches. Very generous welcome pack and delicious meal on arrival (in addition and ordered in advance) which gave a true taste of the local produce. Very comfortable bed with nice bedding, bathrooms clean with good baths and showers.

The owners were very friendly and helpful, extremely willing to share their local knowledge. Knowing that we are used to warmer climes they made sure that the gite was warm - the thick walls hold the heat in winter and keep it cool in summer.

A great place to base yourself for trips to both Pau and the Pyrenees.

“Peaceful, relaxing and characterful - an excellent base for exploring the Pyrenees”
Reviewed October 24, 2011 for a stay in September 2011

Vieux Chenes is a characterful house in the deep countryside, up on an escarpment overlooking the Pau valley. Spacious and tastefully-furnished accommodation - particularly the bedrooms - and a well-equipped kitchen and living room. The pool is large, clean and has gorgeous views down the valley, and there is a nice private bbq area. Well-situated for exploring the interesting local villages, and for reaching south to the Pyrenees and north to Pau and other historic towns. Gillian Pye is a welcoming and generous host, and we quickly felt wholly at home. We will certainly be back!
