We were driving to Pau from Bordeaux and wanted a site for a simple lunch. Even though we arrived just a few minutes before the cook was finished, the staff quickly found their English speaking waitress, who took our orders for three different house specialty "croutons" or open-faced grilled cheese sandwiches with various creative toppings, and delicious fresh green salads. Along with the very pleasant lunch, glasses of local wine, and friendly service, the waitress also provided us with a really good introduction to the area and lots of ideas of activities for our upcoming week. We were very pleased.

I had this restaurant on my "to-do" list for Pau, but as it opens only from Thursday to Saturday, did not manage to go until now.

The first impression is fairly basic, and this is not a fancy nor upmarket place by any means. It's small, simple, and casual. The wait staff is equally casual and easygoing in a friendly way. No pretension here.

The menu seems to have quite a bit of choice, but the dinner menu (23 euros for three courses - very reasonable) has only three choices for each course. That's OK - I'd rather have limited choice of good things, rather than a lot of choice of mediocre offerings. When I went it was a crumbed Brie, a "crème brûlée", or a soup for the first course. For the second course it was Magret de canard, "meat of the day", or noix St. Jacques. Dessert was chocolate fondant, trio of crème brûlée, or crumble.

On the recommendation of the (Australian) waitress, I went with the crème brûlée for the first course as I was intrigued by this concept. A dessert to start with? Actually it was quite successful - being savoury, with roasted tomatoes and parmesan cheese amongst other things. A good start. Next was the Magret de Canard (have to have duck at least once during a visit to Pau) and although I'm not a huge duck fan, this was very well cooked - perfectly done pink without being bloody, very tender, and with a delicious sauce. Dessert had to be the chocolate; although I was tempted by the trio of crème brûlée I thought twice in one meal might just be too much. The dessert was good, without being anything special.

The bill came to 36 euros including a half bottle of Madiran, which I thought was very reasonable.

A good address, although I'm not sure it quite merits the ranking it currently has in TA, you will not be disappointed here.

We are just so pleased that we decided to go into this restaurant for our evening meal, it had a nice friendly atmosphere. The service was excellent, the food was great, so was the wine, and well priced for what we had.

Just returned from Pau, France; and, I discovered this incredible local restaurant, L'Entracte at 2 Bis, Rue St Louis 64000 Pau, France. Ate there 4 times in all, trying first the plat du jour (plate of the day), pork medallions in a grainy mustard cream sauce, roasted polenta cake with a marvelous fresh green salad. The house wine was quite nice...and incredibly inexpensive. The creme brulee was so good, I chose it to finish off each meal. The entre' salads were heaping with fresh produce, cheese and meat. The duck with a raspberry vinaigrette sauce though was my favorite. This is a place the locals go when THEY want to eat out!....
