place I have ever been! Had an enjoyable 5 days at the Alpenhof with three family members and two dogs. We hiked, walked, ate laughed and enjoyed the company of the hosts as well as other guests. We had a wonderful stay and highly recommend this hotel for the traveller looking for a relaxed family type atmosphere.

Room Tip: wonderful view from them all

Gorgeous location in the Lauterbrunnen valley, surrounded by dramatic mountains and their waterfalls! The house itself was well equipped with most things expected in a holiday house, and is excellent value for money. Our hosts Diane & Mark were fantastic, and the fellow-travellers we met there were lovely. Other reviews have already made mention of the location, amenities, nearby walking paths and cable car stations.

I would like to highlight something else, i.e. the layout of the guesthouse lent itself to a very friendly, social setting. We made more friends at The Alpenhof, than at any other hostel/BnB on our travels. The large self-catering kitchen, dining room and lounge area were great for meeting other guests, gaining cooking/travel tips, sharing desserts, or even for relaxing over a cuppa and a chat.

A very enjoyable experience - would love to go back again.

Staying here reminded me of an old an old Adirondack Inn, not so much rustic as basic, plain and simple accommodations, except it was cleaner than any old Adirondack Lodge. We stayed the end of ski season and it is just a short walk to bus stop or short drive to Shilthorn tram. The owners, Mark and Diane are the best. Breakfast was wonderful. Satying at the Alpenhof makes staying in Switzerland affordable. The option of being able to use the house kitchen is perfect for families or groups. If you are looking for a cozy traditional Swiss chalet, this is not it. This is a budget accommodation, no amenities, the rooms are small, and the frame construction means you can hear the floors creek. However, if you are looking for a clean place to sleep with comfortable beds, need a delicious and hearty breakfast before heading out for a day of hiking or sightseeing, and do not want to typical Swiss prices, this is a great option. We hope to return in the summer or fall and use this as our base for day hikes. I give it a 5 star rating on VALUE. My poor rating for the room is based on size w/o bath.
The room was clean and comfortable, but small. Otherwise, the room and the shared bath met our needs.

I have stayed here twice, once in the summer and once in winter. Both seasons offer spectacular scenery, in summer you have great walks to nearby waterfalls, other towns, and of course the mountains. You have blue clear skies and there is an abundance of mountain flowers. In winter, you are surrounded by frozen waterfalls and lots of snow - for snow lovers its perfect. The home is located a short bus ride or walk away from the cable car which you can take up to the ski runs. It is much cheaper staying here than on the mountains and its a good opportunity to save some money which you can spend on the fields. The Alpenhof feels like a home to me. It is homey and rustic, clean and comfortable. I feel like I am on a good school camp - you can mingle with other guests, go for hikes or keep to yourself - it has something for everyone. There is a full kitchen on the lower floor which has everything you would need to make your own meals. Alternatively there is a restaurant a few metres down the road and other reatsurants in Lauterbrunnen, a bus ride away. The owners are Australia and English and speak fluent swiss/german. They are helpful and warm, lovely people. I didnt have a towel but Diane was more than happy to provide a couple for me. The rooms are simple but clean and comfortable. Some rooms are larger for families - some have a balcony with great views of the mountains, others are a little smaller better suited for a single guest. The bathrooms /showers are shared, one lot on each level - one for ladies and one for men. They are clean and yes there is a 5 min limit but I was surprised at just how much I managed to wash in 5 minutes! This place always takes me back to a feeling of just being more centred and enjoy the nice things that nature and people have to offer. Its a good alternative to save some money whilst in Switzerland, it may not be for everyone but it is definately a place where you feel you have relaxed and gotten away from the husle and bustle of modern life.

Room Tip: Top floor is a little quieter

We stayed in Alpenhof Bed & Breakfast for 1 night, between 22-23 September 2012, on the special occasion of our family celebration,
We were 25 people, including kids, parents and grand-parents of course. The place is absolutely isolated, as it is located at the end of the valley of Lauterbrunnen. The Hotel itself, is a kind of old house, with 3 floors, and a main dining room on the main floor. All was clean and beds were ready for us. However, I must admit that our room was very small and it was quite a lot of small flies around the window, that I had to kill... But for the price you are paying, you can not expect more (around CHF. 60.-- per night/per person including breakfast). You will find toilets and showers on every floor, but they are not located inside rooms, so be ready to share them with others. For shower, prepare money in coins of CHF.1.--, as it is needed to have hot water, for 5 minutes only ! I had to use 2 times CHF. 1.-- personally, so be ready !
You will find a very friendly couple of owners, who speak English.
You car can easily be parked next to the Hotel, but no covered parking available !
The bed in our room was pretty small and noisy ! Every time I was moving, it was a wooden noise that you could hear all around.

So, to resume our stay :

The positive points are :
------------------------------

1) Unsual and isolated location.
2) Greens, great walking possibilities all around.
3) Simple but clean accomodation.
4) Very close to telecabin to reach Schilthorn.
5) Very friendly and helpful owners.
6) Views on the mountains and waterfalls are exceptionnal.

Points to be improved :
-----------------------------

1) No towels provided...
2) Hot water of the showers should last more than only 5 minutes.
3) Some rooms are really very small.
4) Many flies inside the room.

Well, that's it. It was really an unsual experience for my wife and myself, are we are used to stay in 4 or 5 stars Hotels generally, but it gave us possibility to see what was a Bed & Breakfast accomodation. I will soon add some photos in the next days, so enjoy them, as it will give you a clear idea of what you will see.

Room Tip: Ask for a room located on last floor as it should be more quiet in the evening.

My wife, 2 kids (8 & 10) and I stayed here for 2 nights in July on our 15 day trip through France, Germany and Switzerland. Situated at the end of the Lauterbrunnen Valley in the Jungfrau region, you fall asleep to the sound of literally dozens of waterfalls coming out of the mountains. You wake up to a hearty breakfast that is much less than the cost in a restaurant.

The room is clean and very affordable when compared to all of the other hotels. The hotel is located about a about a 5 minute drive from the train station in Lauterbrunnen that you can take up to Wengen and Jungfraujoch.

Mark & Diane (owners) were far and away the friendliest and most helpful hosts in all the places we visited. We must have spent an hour or more one morning just chatting like old friends. I will definitely be going back to the area sometime in the future and for sure will stay at the Alpenhof again.

I went here for a long weekend to do some hiking in the mountains. The surroundings of the hostel are amazing. It is at the very end of the road leading up in the valley of Lauterbrunnen. The rooms are basic, but gives all that you need after a day in the mountains. The couple that runs the hostel are really exceptional. They are very knowledgable about the area and are eager to help you.

The location is dream-like, probably the best views that I have ever had from any room. The ski-lifts are a short walk away and the hiking trails start at the doorstep of the hostel. You can sit on the veranda and watch the mountains around you with base-jumpers and paragliders coming in and out of view.

The price is very good. I recommend to pay the extra for the delicious breakfast.

Keep in mind that this is a hostel. You cook your own food and the building is very unpretentious. Yet, the communal kitchen and bathrooms are modernly equipped and always clean. The Stechelberg Hotel is next door and you can go there for a cooked dinner if you want, but the you miss out on the camping-like feeling that you get in the hostel. If you want an authentic stay in the Alps, this is the place to go.
