Hotel de France
Ranked #3 of 13 Hotels in Bergerac
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 18, 2014

The Hotel de France is located at 18 Place Gambetta, Bergerac, just a short walking distance from Notre Dame Church, the old town with its many restaurants and bars and the Dordogne River. Hotel de France has on-site parking for three cars at a charge of 12 Euros per night. On the street in front of the hotel there is free parking from 7.00pm until 8.00am with pay meters operating outside those hours. The large municipal car park in front of the hotel and extending the length of the street also offers a similar service except on market days when it is closed for parking.
We arrived at the hotel at around midday to be greeted warmly by the managers of the hotel. We were shown to our room but when found it was not ready we were invited to have a coffee while we waited.
We were shown around the hotel and informed that although the front door to the hotel was locked after around 9.30pm and at lunch time, access to the hotel could be obtained by entering a pin number at the entrance. Parking arrangements were explained to us and the highlights of Bergerac mentioned. The welcome and information we received was second to none. And this in a 20 room hotel which was fully booked.
The reception area at the hotel was spotlessly clean, tastefully decorated and with a carpet that looked as though it had just been put down. With the warm welcome and the favourable impression gained from the entrance and foyer we knew we were going to have a comfortable stay. We certainly did.
Our room did not disappoint. It was clean, relatively large, tastefully decorated and had a balcony with outdoor furniture. There was a wall mounted flat screen TV and a very effective air conditioner. There were ample cupboards for clothes. In common with some hotels we have stayed in in France there was no in-room safe or mini bar but this was not a problem. Although our room was on the first floor and faced Place Gambetta no untoward street noise entered the room.
WI fi was provided free of charge and we had perfect reception in our room.
There was a separate toilet and separate shower and basin. Both sparkling clean. The bathroom had an ample supply of bars of soap and hair and shower gel. The hot water was refreshingly hot.
At the rear of the hotel in the garden was a swimming pool with several comfortable loungers to recline in. Drinks could be purchased for consumption around the pool. An ideal place to relax after a busy day in Bergerac. It was an unexpected find in a city centre hotel in Bergerac.
Breakfast was not included in our room rate of 95 Euros but could be purchased for an additional ten Euros per person. Served buffet style in the dining room adjoining the foyer it consisted of a continental breakfast with a range of fresh bread, tasty cheese, cold sliced meat, fruit, boiled eggs and cereal. The range and quality could not be faulted.
The friendliness of the managers and staff, the quality of the rooms, the services offered and its location would ensure that should we visit Bergerac again we would not consider staying anywhere else.

Room Tip: Hotel has no lift so the infirm might request a lower floor.

Chose this hotel via Bookings.com for a one night stay after arriving by plane into little Bergerac Airport. Easy to find and centrally located. Nice room overlooking the pool, basically but adequately furnished. Good breakfast and easy parking outside. We would use the hotel again.

Room Tip: Rear rooms face the pool.

We were happy to stay at this hotel for two days. Reception was welcoming and helpful (English was spoken). The room was nice and the breakfast was good. There is a small swimming pool. The atmosphere in the hotel was pleasant.
We can recommend it.

We did not stay at the hotel but had occasion to request assistance from the gentleman at reception. He was very helpful and, based on the service we saw received by a couple booking in at the time, and the help we received, we will stay at the Hotel de France next time we are in Bergerac.

We came upon this hotel by chance as the accommodation we had booked was so awful (Lagrange Prestige Le Clos Des Vignes), we left after the first night and we need to find something quick and at short notice. This hotel is a little gem, and yes the rooms are small, the beds very comfortable, are nicely decorated and clean and have air conditioning. All of the hotel's staff were very friendly, exceptionally helpful and spoke perfect English. The hotel is the centre of town, with easy access to the shops and restaurants, with car parking right outside - what more could you ask for. The pool was great and the seating around the pool was comfortable, we would stay here again.

Room Tip: We had a 2 adjoining rooms at the back of the hotel and did not hear any noise.

We stayed at hotel de France for a whole week. I think the two reviewers below must be a bit stuck up and I'm not surprised the owner had at you for trying to climb the balcony! Anyway, we found the owners very welcoming and were happy to help us the whole week. They spoke good English and kept out of our way but helped when needed.

Our room was large with a separate shower/sink and WC. We too had a balcony. Yes, the room was sometimes noisy but you have to expect this if it overlooks a market square and near a chiming cathedral!!! The bed was very comfortable (slept in once or twice!)

Obviously, the hotel is 3* so it is not luxury but there is a quiet pool area outside too. Perhaps the drinks sevice should be better advertised and it would be excellent if there was a kettle + tea/coffee facilities in room! The English love this, especially when a nice cuppa was hard to come by in Bergerac!

Overall, a comfortable, friendly hotel which I wold stay at again.

Overall disappointed with this hotel. Rooms are small and dirty, owner is very rude, location is good but rather noisy. I would recommend the Hotel Bordeaux next door, stayed there the year before, much better value for money and friendly
