The Hotel de France is located at 18 Place Gambetta, Bergerac, just a short walking distance from Notre Dame Church, the old town with its many restaurants and bars and the Dordogne River. Hotel de France has on-site parking for three cars at a charge of 12 Euros per night. On the street in front of the hotel there is free parking from 7.00pm until 8.00am with pay meters operating outside those hours. The large municipal car park in front of the hotel and extending the length of the street also offers a similar service except on market days when it is closed for parking.
We arrived at the hotel at around midday to be greeted warmly by the managers of the hotel. We were shown to our room but when found it was not ready we were invited to have a coffee while we waited.
We were shown around the hotel and informed that although the front door to the hotel was locked after around 9.30pm and at lunch time, access to the hotel could be obtained by entering a pin number at the entrance. Parking arrangements were explained to us and the highlights of Bergerac mentioned. The welcome and information we received was second to none. And this in a 20 room hotel which was fully booked.
The reception area at the hotel was spotlessly clean, tastefully decorated and with a carpet that looked as though it had just been put down. With the warm welcome and the favourable impression gained from the entrance and foyer we knew we were going to have a comfortable stay. We certainly did.
Our room did not disappoint. It was clean, relatively large, tastefully decorated and had a balcony with outdoor furniture. There was a wall mounted flat screen TV and a very effective air conditioner. There were ample cupboards for clothes. In common with some hotels we have stayed in in France there was no in-room safe or mini bar but this was not a problem. Although our room was on the first floor and faced Place Gambetta no untoward street noise entered the room.
WI fi was provided free of charge and we had perfect reception in our room.
There was a separate toilet and separate shower and basin. Both sparkling clean. The bathroom had an ample supply of bars of soap and hair and shower gel. The hot water was refreshingly hot.
At the rear of the hotel in the garden was a swimming pool with several comfortable loungers to recline in. Drinks could be purchased for consumption around the pool. An ideal place to relax after a busy day in Bergerac. It was an unexpected find in a city centre hotel in Bergerac.
Breakfast was not included in our room rate of 95 Euros but could be purchased for an additional ten Euros per person. Served buffet style in the dining room adjoining the foyer it consisted of a continental breakfast with a range of fresh bread, tasty cheese, cold sliced meat, fruit, boiled eggs and cereal. The range and quality could not be faulted.
The friendliness of the managers and staff, the quality of the rooms, the services offered and its location would ensure that should we visit Bergerac again we would not consider staying anywhere else.
