In our two weeks plus in the Dordogne, and after many great meals at great (e.g., Trip Advisor recommended) restaurants, La Table du Marche provided the best meal we had; a three course lunch that was as innovative and delicious as just about anything we have seen. For example, the entrée salad was more creative in design and contents than we can ever recall being served. If we are ever in or near Bergerac again, this will be a “must stop.”

Homemade quiches and salads were good. A small but busy restaurant in the heart of Bergerac.

Living in the southwest of France, you get used to good food. A restaurant really has to have something special to lift it above the rest and this one stands out head and shoulders. I have not had great dining experiences in Bergerac, as often happens in a tourist town. The restaurant is small, 28 covers with modern decor and the kitchen open to the dining area. We had lunch which at 19 euros for 2 courses is certainly more than 12 euros for 3 courses which is the going rate in bistros. There was a young, efficient, staff and I saw at least 3 chefs. The amuse bouche was leek soup with a cream of gorgonzola; the entre, a parcel of delicate shelfish & veg in delicate flavoured cream, with serving of light fruit sorbet and a dressing of 'seeds' of brocolli heads with parsley and wasabi; the main dish was fillet of sea bass served on wild rice with a jus. The meal was beautifully presented, inventive and bursting with taste from start to finish. We shall certainly be recommending this restaurant to friends and taking family there in the summer when there is a terrace outside. The whole experience was a gourmet delight. The only thing I would mark down slightly is the atmosphere but it may be different for an evening meal.

We have been to this restaurant several times as it has gradually found its niche. Now it is really smart and chic but relaxed. They have a small terrasse outside and air con inside - both have their charms.
Today we went for lunch. The choice was 28 euros for 3 courses and 22 euros for 2 courses. We started with a cold amuse bouche soup of petit pois - delicious and refreshing. The starters were very imaginative and light enough for a hot summer's day; I had a take on Peach Melba but a clever savoury version with tomatoes and goat cheese. Everything is beautifully and artistically presented.
The main courses gave enough choice without being silly. I had fish, with a red pepper sorbet. The iberian pork got good reviews as did the magret de canard and the monkfish. All were quite different in presentation and vegetables.
The desserts too were good - a dessert du jour was another witty twist of a blanquette of strawberries; other desserts were semolina (nothing like school pudding!) and strawberries with yoghurt.
A nice touch was a little strange liqueur with the coffee as well as sweeties.
The wines were great - lots of choice, especially Bergerac, and not too expensive. They also sell wine by the glass and recommend a different wine for each dish.
Service was friendly and correct; after coffee we stayed on the terrasse for ages, chatting, without any hassle to leave. All in all a really good experience and a cut above the tourist fare of Bergerac.
The final bill came to 75 euros per couple
