“Outstanding restaurant in Biarritz”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2009

The Sissinou is just a few minutes walk from the center of Biarritz. It's an attractive restaurant, the welcome from the owner was warm and the food was terrific. My sweetbreads were as fine as I've ever had (I eat them often) and everything else was first rate. I find the wine lists at most French bistros to be disappointing - having mostly mediocre Bordeaux and Burgundies - but the Sissinou's list included a fine selection from several regions in the south. The Fitou red from Languedoc-Roussillon that we ordered was outstanding. One of the best in Biarritz!

“Beware of the Specials”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 23, 2009

This restaurant is reviewed as one of the best in Biarritz. It is centrally located and quite small - perhaps 15 tables in all and is frequented by what seems to be mainly upmarket locals - during the evening many of the diners approached the kitchen and spoke to the chef. You enter through a boudoir like curtain off the street, and the room is modern and functional, but with no real atmosphere. The menu consists of 6 starters all at one price (15E) and the same number of mains (all 27E). The hostess was a charming woman who spoke French to all her customers and a younger waitress who was happy to speak English. We ordered in French and thats where the problem arose. There were 2 specials of the day - one starter and one main - I selected the main special which was Turbot. We were having a great night until we received the bill. The Turbot to my surprise was 40 Euros - there had been no mention of the price when we were informed of the "dishes of the day". Whilst it was my stupidity to assume that the specials of the day would be the same price as the menu, and all fish is expensive in France, the fact that we hadn't been informed left us disenchanted with the restaurant. We challenged the hostess and were told that the price had been mentioned. She offered no apology or attempt to rectify the problem, so we left feeling disillusioned and disappointed. This was a pity as the food was excellent. So my advice would be, by all means go to Sissinou, as the food is great, just clarify the price of the specials before ordering.
