“Basque of the Basque”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 17, 2013

This place is AWESOME! So good we came here two nights in row while staying in Biarritz. If you are looking for real Basque food in an authentic environment this is it. The dinning room is like family style seating with large picnic tables spread through out. The specials are up on a chalkboard that give some good off menu options.

The menu is small which we like because it means they do everything good. For appetizers we got the paté Basque one night which may not appeal to everyone but was really good as it is served with some regional sausage, green peppers, some jambon Bayonne (thinly sliced cured and aged ham from the region, very similar to prosciutto), we also had the calamari which is amazing, excellently seasoned!

I ordered the Cote de Beouf to share with my friend (it is huge, 900g. and is recommended to share). They cook it on an old brick grill that you can seen as you walk into the dinning room. The meat is beautiful as it is local meat and tastes so fresh. My wife ordered the seafood platter which came with salmon, cod, calamari, shrimp etc.

If you want to experience Basque food and culture I feel this is the spot. Most of the items from the menu come for the region. The service is super friendly and fast. They speak good English to explain some of the items on the menu. The dinning room is large and most people are in large groups. Its a great experience and is a must if you are Biarritz or a nearby town.

“What do Brits know?”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 13, 2013

really good atmosphere, service quite good.....but.......even I know the difference between cod and hake!! They clearly ran out of cod but thought he's from the UK what does he know just give him hake, which is disappointing.

“excellent place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 10, 2012

We (wife plus 2 children) stayed in Biarritz for 8 days, eating out lunchtime and in the evenings; this was the only restaurant we ate in twice. This is a local type restaurant, it can be quite noisy but that only adds to the charm of the place. It is also a bar, where the locals can have an aperitif, they have 2 dining rooms, and one is bar side the other in a separate room. The kitchen is open where you can see the chefs preparing and cooking the food. The food was very good, whether choosing fish or meat. One evening we had the bar de ligne”, caught that day, it was excellent. Also the ham (Iberico) the children couldn’t get enough of it.
We went back a couple days later, the waiter remembered us, remembered what we had ordered made some suggestions on what we should try this time. All of the staff was very professional with a personal touch. It’s not fine dining but a genuine local dining experience.
